Introduction
I am Andrea Sneekes, a project leader Environmental Chemistry at Wageningen Marine Research. Pollution in the environment has been my working field for more than 20 years. The last years I mainly manage projects of monitoring of chemical levels in biota for OSPAR and EU WFD and developing proficiency tests.

Background:
The report "Biotamonitoring in the Rijkswateren" consists of two parts. Part I, "Assessment and Trends," describes the monitoring results up to the year 2022 and assesses the measured substance concentrations against the standards of the Oslo and Paris Conventions (OSPAR), the European Water Framework Directive (KRW), and the European M...
Chlorine efficacy as a biocide for ballast water treatment was investigated under cold- and warm-water temperatures across winter and summer seasons. Freshwater phytoplankton samples were collected and acclimated under in situ environmental conditions ranging from 2 to 22 °C. Samples were exposed to seven chlorine treatments (from 0.02 to 5.0 ppm),...
Invasive species can have strong impact on the local ecosystem, not only substantial impact on the local ecosystem, but also on economy and human health. This review on marine alien species outlines aspects of prevention, eradication and control strategies. When managing invasive species, prevention is preferable and less costly than controlling sp...
In the period 2013-2015 the effect of two biocides used for the treatment of ballast water has been evaluated at low ambient temperatures. Peraclean® Ocean and sodium hypochlorite were used as biocides. Most of the tests were conducted during winter and early spring at the laboratories of IMARES in Den Helder, using outdoor cultures from which phyt...
The BIO-SEA® Ballast Water Treatment System (BWTS) was tested at the IMARES land-based test facility. General goal of the tests was to compare two different brands of filter and to test the filter efficiency of finer mesh sizes of each brand. The filters were tested in combination with a ‘one-shot UVtreatment’ (ballasting and deballasting the same...
AirTree is preparing for land-based testing at the NIOZ/IMARES test facility. As the Ballast Water Management System (BWMS) developed by AirTree uses ozone as active substance, IMO Guideline G9 applies and Basic and Final Approval are also required. In preparing the Basic Approval dossier, it appeared that too little is known about the development...
The retreating ice cover opens up the opportunity for new shipping routes, and consequently shipping traffic in the Arctic region is increasing and with this the risk of introducing non-indigenous species (NIS) via ballast water. Ballast water must therefore be treated to prevent the transport of NIS in an environmentally friendly way to minimise t...
Ballast water treatment systems are routinely tested for efficacy and residual toxicity at spring and summer temperatures in temperate areas, as that is the period when biological production is sufficiently high to match IMO testing requirements (guideline G8). Shipping, however, continues throughout the year and, as polar ice rapidly disappears, a...
Here we analyze the potential of black carbon (BC) and oil-inclusive models to explain in situ sorption of 1,1-dichloro-2,2-bis(p-chlorophenyl)ethylene (DDE), 1,1-dichloro-2,2-bis(p-chlorophenyl)ethane (DDD), organochlorine pesticides (OCP), polychlorobiphenyls (PCB), polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAH), polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDD), and po...
The topic of this report is a sensitivity analysis of the SimpleTreat.i model. SimpleTreat.i (Van der Wal 2008) is a slightly modified version of the SimpleTreat model for evaluating municipal waste water treatment plants (WWTPs). The original SimpleTreat model is described in Struijs (1996). The modifications are intended to make SimpleTreat.i mor...
Introduction of non-indigenous species is a risk associated with discharge of ballast water from ships transporting cargo between regions. The IMO has set out a mandatory framework for ballast water management on board ships. EnvioMar GmbH has developed a Ballast Water Treatment System (BWTS) using acrolein as active substance. The toxicity of the...
The Microtox ® bioassay was tested in an interlaboratory study to evaluate the variability when using solid-phase samples. The exercise consisted of two consecutive phases each one carried out with six sediment samples from Spanish ports. Phase I included six laboratories that reported results for the solid-phase test (SPT) protocol, while Phase II...

Ballast water is used in ships to maintain their balance. With the ballast water, non-indigenous organisms are transported aount the world, which may result in local disturbances of coastal ecosystems when the ballast water is discharged. The aim of this project is to assess the ecotoxicological effects of treated ballast water
