Introduction

Rapid expansion and intensification of agriculture create challenges for the conservation of biodiversity and associated ecosystem services. In Argentina, the total row crop planted area has increased in recent decades with the expansion of soybean cultivation, homogenizing the landscape. In 2003 we started the first long-term, large-scale bird mon...

The theory of ecosystem services (ES) needs to be operationalized to contribute to practices leading to sustainable use of ecosystems, which includes solving trade-offs between private and public benefits and incorporating monetary and non-monetary values to help inform decisions. We developed a framework to analyse the impacts of farmers’ manageme...
Article
Organic farming is more environmentally friendly than conventional agriculture, promoting greater levels of habitat heterogeneity. Field borders could be more suitable for biodiversity in agricultural anthromes. Small mammals are crucial in these anthromes due to their contribution to food webs and seed consumption. We used hierarchical multi‐seaso...

Ground birds are strongly associated with the vegetation structure in natural environments under livestock grazing. Birds that fed on the ground may be the most affected by overgrazing, while those that fed on the shrub layer may respond positively to shrub encroachment in open xerophytic forest. Therefore, evaluating changes in bird species associ...

Several studies in European and North American agroecosystems conclude that organic farming benefits birds compared to conventional farming. Nevertheless, there are some biases toward these geographic regions and farm size. Argentinian agroecosystems are particularly homogeneous with large arable fields and sparse uncultivated field margins (i.e. l...

Background Reconciling agriculture and biodiversity conservation is a challenge given the growing demand for agricultural products. In recent decades, Argentina has witnessed agricultural expansion and intensification affecting biodiversity and associated ecosystem services. Within agroecosystems, the level of habitat quality is critical for birds,...
Article
Agricultural expansion and intensification has led globally to a rapid landscape structure change and high agrochemical use resulting in habitat loss and degraded environmental quality. Co-occurrence of landscape change and agrochemical contamination threatens biodiversity and might have interactive effects especially for organisms with complex lif...

The North American beaver (Castor canadensis) was introduced in 1946 from Canada to Isla Grande de Tierra del Fuego to develop a fur industry. Their expansion to most of the habitats of Tierra del Fuego and their presence on the continent, moved Argentina and Chile to test their eradication. The objective of this paper is to analyse a pilot eradica...

Understanding how biodiversity responds to intensifying agriculture is critical to mitigating the trade‐offs between them. These trade‐offs are particularly strong in tropical and subtropical deforestation frontiers, yet it remains unclear how changing landscape context in such frontiers alters agriculture–biodiversity trade–offs. We focus on the A...

Wild birds, strongly associated with the vegetation structure of livestock farms, are often used as indicators of environmental sustainability. Here, we explore the relationship between the intensity of grazing, as a driver of vegetation structure in livestock farms, and the bird communities present in the farms. The study was conducted in 36 lives...

The rapid expansion of agriculture in recent decades in Argentina poses challenges for conservation of bird diversity because many species that provide ecosystems services to agriculture are sensitive to these changes. Several regional drivers, such as climatic conditions or production systems, could affect bird’s persistence and modify distributio...

Worldwide, shorebirds are a major component of rice field avian biodiversity. Rice fields in Argentina and southern Brazil hold large numbers of shorebirds and have been recognized as important areas for migrating or wintering species. To develop successful shorebird conservation strategies, we need to understand geographic variation in shorebird a...

Agricultural expansion and intensification recently occurring in Argentina, particularly in the Pampas region, has resulted in important changes in the agricultural landscape. Consequently, biotic populations may have experienced changes on abundance and distribution. In this work, we analyzed the relationship between changes in the density of four...

In Argentina, the rapid expansion and intensification of row crop production that has occurred during the last 20 years has resulted in the loss of habitat and spatial heterogeneity in agroecosystems. One of the principal effects of industrialized row crop production is the loss of avian diversity and associated ecosystem services that benefit crop...

Birds play several roles in agricultural lands and respond to habitat heterogeneity within the agricultural landscape. Agricultural intensification in Argentina has increased the sown area, mainly with soybean, fragmenting landscapes in the pampas and mesopotamic region. In Entre Ríos Province, the original Espinal forest has been fragmented, leavi...

Avian influenza (AI) viruses have been sporadically isolated in South America. The most recent reports are from an outbreak in commercial poultry in Chile in 2002 and its putative ancestor from a wild bird in Bolivia in 2001. Extensive surveillance in wild birds was carried out in Argentina during 2006-2007. Using RRT-PCR, 12 AI positive detections...
