Introduction
Since 1993, three years into my Bachelor's in Biology, I've accumulated over 20 years of research and teaching experience. My experiences and education integrate a life-time of learning encompassing four continents (North, Central & South America; Europe; Antarctica), many terrestrial and freshwater communities including polar, temperate and tropical ecosystems, three ocean systems (Atlantic, Pacific & Antarctic) and research projects dedicated to the conservation of birds, mammals, and fish.

sees sustainable scholarly publishing as an inherently collaborative enterprise connecting authors, nonprofit publishers, academic institutions, research libraries, and research funders in the common goal of maximizing access to critical research. Light loggers reveal weather-driven changes in the daily activity patterns of arboreal and semifossori...

Dispersal is increasingly recognized as a process of fundamental importance in population dynamics and other aspects of biology. Concurrently, interest in age-dependent effects on survival, including actuarial senescence, has increased, especially in studies of long-lived sea-birds. Nevertheless, datasets necessary for studying dispersal and age-de...

Activity time budgets in apex predators have been proposed as indicators of population status relative to resource limitation or carrying capacity. We used archival time-depth recorders implanted in 15 adult female and 4 male sea otters (Enhydra lutris) from the northernmost population of the species, Prince William Sound, Alaska, USA, to examine t...

Atlantic Herring is a keystone species in several marine ecosystems, supporting intensive fisheries as well as many predators including seabirds. Biomass of this stock in eastern North America has declined considerably in recent years, potentially putting at risk populations of its predators. Although adult survival in seabirds is considered robust...

We examined strontium isotope ratios (⁸⁷Sr/⁸⁶Sr) in fish otoliths to determine the origins of invasive piscivores in the Upper Colorado River Basin (UCRB, western USA). We examined ⁸⁷Sr/⁸⁶Sr from fishes in different reservoirs, as well as the temporal stability and interspecies variability of ⁸⁷Sr/⁸⁶Sr of fishes within reservoirs, determined if ⁸⁷S...
Conference Paper
Full-text available
We examined the utility of strontium isotope ratios (87Sr/86Sr) in fish otoliths to determine the origins of invasive piscivores throughout the Upper Colorado River Basin. Our objectives were to examine the distinctiveness of 87Sr/86Sr from fishes in different reservoirs, and temporal and interspecific variability of these ratios within reservoirs....

We estimated apparent survival of 33 adult Thayer's Gulls Larus thayeri and 21 adult Glaucous Gulls Larus hyperboreus nesting sympatrically at a small colony on St. Helena Island, Nunavut, in Canada's high Arctic, using five consecutive years (2003–2007) of capture-mark-resight data. Resighting probabilities were high in all years for both species...
Article

Apparent survival of adult Herring Gulls (Larus argentatus) occupying two distinct breeding habitats within the East Bay Migratory Bird Sanctuary, on Southampton Island, Nunavut was estimated. The first group occurred on a small island where 30 pairs bred at relatively high densities sympatrically with Common Eider (Somateria mollissima), on whose...

We estimated annual survival probabilities of color-banded adult Herring Gulls (Larus argentatus) breeding in a colony on the Canadian shore of Lake Ontario, between 1981 and 1984, and between 1993 and 1998. During the study, major changes occurred in prey fish availability, fish-eating bird abundance, and organochlorine contaminant exposure. We us...

We report survival probabilities for 148 breeding adult Atlantic Puffins (Fratercula arctica) monitored through capture-mark-resight at two colonies for 11 years (1992-2003). The colonies, Eastern Egg Rock and Seal Island, are similar to 42 km apart in the Gulf of Maine. Support for competing models in the program MARK suggests constant survival of...
Article
As central-place foragers, colonial seabirds should be able to compensate, up to some threshold, for changing breeding conditions by remaining flexible in the amount of time allocated to foraging versus other activities. Black-legged kittiwake (Rissa tridactyla) colonies in Chiniak Bay, Kodiak Island, Alaska experienced high productivity from 2001...

We measured overwinter body temperature (T b) of 89 free-living Arctic Ground Squirrels (Spermophilus parryii) on the North Slope of Alaska over ten consecutive years to test for effects of age, sex and year on patterns of T b change. We were unable to detect year effects on any of the parameters tested suggestive of similarity of cues that modulat...
Article
Although radiotelemetry is useful for monitoring nest attendance and the foraging ranges and distribution of breeding birds, attachment of transmitters may affect reproductive behavior. In 2003, we captured 25 adult Tufted Puffins (Fratercula cirrhata) at two colonies in Chiniak Bay, Kodiak Island, Alaska, and fitted them with subcutaneously anchor...

The slimy sculpin Cottus cognatus is an abundant and widespread benthic fish that inhabits cold lakes and rivers in North America. The objective of this study was to estimate survival and detection probabilities for slimy sculpin in relation to several environmental and biological predictors. Passive integrated transponder (PIT) tags were implanted...
Article
Bands are a common marking method in bird studies and capture-mark-reencounter (CMR) models are often used to analyze banding data. Common to this family of models are two assumptions: marks do not fall off or become unreadable and individuals within groups remain equally detectable. When data fail to meet these assumptions, results of CMR analyses...
Article

Several weaknesses in our understanding of long-lived animal populations have persisted, mainly due to a prevalence of studies of a single local population at the expense of multisite studies. We performed a multisite capture-mark-resight analysis using 2050 Atlantic Puffins (Fratercula arctica) banded as chicks on four islands (colonies) over 24 y...

We report survival probabilities for 148 breeding adult Atlantic Puffins (Fratercula arctica) monitored through capture-mark-resight at two colonies for 11 years (1992–2003). The colonies, Eastern Egg Rock and Seal Island, are ∼42 km apart in the Gulf of Maine. Support for competing models in the program MARK suggests constant survival of 0.95 ± 0....
