The oceanic anoxic events (OAEs) are characterized by enhanced accumulation of organic matter in marine sediments. However, there is still an ongoing debate regarding the interplay between production and preservation during these events. Moreover, few studies provide quantitative estimations of primary productivity and/or the amount of carbon prese...

Tropical precipitation patterns will most likely be altered by future climate change, with major socioeconomic consequences for human populations that are highly reliant on water availability for subsistence like populations in northeastern (NE) Brazil. Socioeconomic consequences may be particularly disruptive in the occurrence of abrupt climate ch...

The evaluation of total organic carbon (TOC) content from wells is a routine practice for assessing source rock potential, and empirical relationships to estimate TOC content have been proposed and used in organic facies modelling. However, no critical evaluations address how well the available TOC-predictive equations estimate the TOC content in r...

Plain Language Summary Paleoceanography and Paleoclimatology seeks to reveal past changes in the oceans and the climate, to help us better understand how Earth systems work. Traditionally, it has a strong focus on international networks and cooperation and we have accomplished many international projects. However, we are still facing some major cha...

Cyclostratigraphy has revealed the quasi-periodic nature that globally distributed sedimentary successions present through the Phanerozoic. This is mainly the case of the strong eccentricity-related greenhouse climate of the Cretaceous period, a time interval in which the long-eccentricity 405-kyr cycle has been routinely used to constrain high-res...

In this work, synoptic pressure charts at sea level, manually made and processed by the Brazilian Navy every 12 hours between the years 2010 and 2020, as a product resulting from a consensus among Navy meteorologists, were used to study the cyclonic pathways in the Southwestern Atlantic (METAREA V). Data obtained for all cyclones identified in the...

Scientific projections point to the increase of greenhouse gas levels in the atmosphere will turn the oceans warmer and, consequently, the upper layer of the thermohaline circulation will get thicker, restricting the productivity areas. Oligotrophic conditions will tend to prevail, and expanding the range of proxy data in oligotrophic oceans, acros...

The variables involved in defining the impact degree and, consequently, the risk of a given rainfall event are many and depend on climatic information and on the characteristics inherent to the region for which the forecast is being made. Understanding the relationship between the behavior of the rains and the response of a given location to these...

Although the atmosphere and the ocean work as a coupled system, measuring the wind over the ocean and integrating the resulting time series to synoptic fields proved to be a challenge. One of the main issues is the limited amount of in situ observations over the oceans, especially those obtained by marine buoys. Model data are mostly used, but they...

The South Atlantic Convergence Zone (SACZ) plays a key role in the South American monsoon system (SAMS) precipitation regime, and accounts for around 25% of the rainfall volume over Southeast Brazil between October and April, on average, with peaks of 56% in March and 41% in January. Due to its often varying position and multi-variable structure, d...

The sea ice extent around Antarctica has shrunk to 2.1 million square kilometers in the onset of austral winter 2017. This number is about 10 per cent less sea ice in Antarctica than the previous record minimum occurred in 2011, based on 39 years of satellite monitoring. An increase in sea-ice extent earlier in May 2017indicated an end of the melti...

There is natural climate variability. Paleoclimatologists study historic climate changes performance by complex analysis of lake sediments, ice cores or stalagmite caves. These records a...
