The European Si elegans project aims at unravelling C. elegans‘ nervous system function by accurately emulating the neurons and synaptic connections using 302 parallel interconnected advanced field-programmable gate array (FPGA) processing units and optical modules and by embodying with a biophysically accurate soft-body representation in a virtual behavioural arena. Si elegans will serve fundamental neuroscientific and applied computational neuroscience purposes like advancement of computation and advancement of neuroscience. www.si-elegans.eu
