Introduction
I am a conservation leader at the Botanical Garden of Medellin. I received a Ph.D. and a master's in science from Amsterdam University and a Bs in Biology from the University of Antioquia. My studies have focused on epiphytes' distribution patterns in Colombia's different ecosystems through descriptive and experimental fieldwork. At the Botanical Garden, I lead conservation action for threatened species, focusing on recovery plans, outreach programs, and warning about forests loss.

The tropical Andes, the highest global biodiversity hotspot, is highly threatened by habitat loss and intense land use. Forest loss rates have remained persistent throughout the region during this century, resulting in a spread fragmented landscape composed of small forest fragments. However, the spatial distribution and magnitude of the proximate...

Understanding the mechanisms driving community assembly has been a major focus of ecological research for nearly a century, yet little is known about these mechanisms in commensal communities, particularly with respect to their historical/evolutionary components. Here, we use a large-scale dataset of 4,440 vascular plant species to explore the rela...

Vascular epiphytes are extraordinarily diverse in the tropical Andean region. Compared to trees and terrestrial herbs, epiphytes are more vulnerable to forest alteration due to their structural dependence on trees and environmental requirements. Based on experimental approaches for ecological purposes, monitoring air pollutants, and seeking propaga...

The Bromeliaceae family has been used as a model to study adaptive radiation due to its terrestrial, epilithic, and epiphytic habits with wide morpho-physiological variation. Functional groups described by Pittendrigh in 1948 have been an integral part of ecophysiological studies. In the current study, we revisited the functional groups of epiphyti...

Plant functional traits impact the fitness and environmental niche of plants. Major plant functional types have been characterized by their trait spectrum, and the environmental and phylogenetic imprints on traits have advanced several ecological fields. Vascular epiphytes are a diverse and conspicuous component of biodiversity in tropical and subtropical forests. Still, the patterns and drivers of epiphyte assemblages are poorly studied in comparison to soil‐rooted plants. Our current knowledge about diversity patterns of epiphytes mainly stems from local studies or floristic inventories, but this...

Epiphytes thrive in the North Andean forests, where species richness and abundance are the highest in the world. However the role of epiphytes in key forest functions such as water flux regulation and carbon storage remains unknown. Basic questions like how much epiphytic biomass is in these forests are still to be answered. We studied epiphytes in...
