Many of these species (22%) are endemic to the country, while 49% occur in Peru and other South American countries, 21% are found throughout the Neotropics, and 8% are widely distributed in the Americas. Thes...
In the last decades, the loss and reduction of wetlands have become evident worldwide due to various pressures related to the increase in human population and their activities. This situation is also present in the coastal wetlands of Peru, especially in small bodies, which makes it necessary to investigate their biodiversity and ecology in order t...
Chironomidae of symbiotic habits have been recorded in different parts of the world, among commensals and parasites. There are different genera reported at the moment, however questions such as the origin of commensal or parasitic life, which occurred first or what are their benefits remain debatable. In order to contribute with information to eluc...

papel trófico que cumplen estos organismos en estos ecosistemas. En el presente trabajo se estudia la preferencia de microhábitat de la comunidad de macroinvertebrados acuáticos y se describen sus gremios tróficos a través del...
Coastal wetlands are ecosystems that are being reduced every day due to anthropic factors. In these environments, taxonomic and ecological studies are scarce, especially in the Neotropical zone. The lack of biological monitoring in these areas has prevented the gathering of evidence on a probable loss of aquatic biodiversity. In the present study,...
Telmatobius macrostomus and Telmatobius brachydactylus are two high Andean aquatic
frogs categorized as "Endangered" by the Red List of the International Union for
Conservation of Nature and by the Peruvian Legislation. With the aim of evaluating the water
quality of their habitats, four bimonthly samplings in the field were carried out at 12 study...
Shark skin is covered by small structures called dermal denticles whose functions are diverse, such as protection, bioluminescence, hydrodynamics, among other functions. These structures have a great variety of shapes and sizes, which can be a useful approach for specimen identification as diagnostic characters between species. The present study ai...
Pedrowygomyia is a Neotropical genus of Simuliidae composed of four species; all were described in 1989 from high-elevation (above 3,000 m) areas in the Andean region. In this article, a new species for this genus, Pedrowygomyia hanaq n. sp., is described based on all stages of development. The new species was collected in the south-central Andes o...

We assessed water quality using physical, chemical, and biological characteristics in 37 streams between Puerto Maldonado and Cusco in Peru. Study sites ranged from ~200 to 4000 m in elevation, with streams selected as pairs (control/natural vs. human impacted) along this gradient. In general, temperature decreased (R2 = 0.82) and other parameters...
Spatial variation of the aquatic macroinvertebrates community in the littoral zone of the Santa Rosa coastal wetland, Lima, Peru. Coastal wetlands are sensitive ecosystems of high productivity due to ecological services they provide: water purification, flood reduction, and protection of marine coasts. In addition , these zones are places of great...
Rheotanytarsus is a speciose genus, currently composed by more than 100 nominal species distributed worldwide, 19 are known from the Neotropical region, four from South America and only one is registered for Peru. In the present study, a new species is described and illustrated based on males collected in the Peruvian Andes. In addition, the key to...
The aquaculture activity in the white shrimp culture using recirculating water deteriorates the quality of the water by the hydrodynamic action of watermetabolites- organic matter, which generate negative impacts on the production of the crustacean. The objective of this research is to demonstrate that the autochthonous microbiota extracted from th...
El objetivo de este estudio fue conocer la composición y estructura de la comunidad de coleópteros acuáticos en diferentes quebradas a lo largo de un amplio gradiente altitudinal (476-4411 m de altitud) en Cusco, Perú.
