Quantum dots (QDs) are semiconductor material with nano-crystal characterized by high absorption coefficient, retention time and re-emission in a desired direction with tunable spectrum. These characteristics render QDs favorable for concentrating solar radiation in the desired direction to form a quantum dot solar concentrators (QDSC). The extent...
Over the last few years, the UAE government has been dedicated to transforming many of its treasured heritage buildings into museums. One issue with this, however, is that these buildings were not designed for this purpose. Therefore, ensuring they operate well in their new roles is a crucial question that has been thoroughly researched by the auth...
Skylights and windows are building openings that enhance human comfort and well-being in various ways. Recently, a massive drive is witnessed to replace traditional openings with building integrated photovoltaic (BIPV) systems to generate power in a bid to reduce buildings’ energy. The problem with most of the BIPV glazing lies in the obstruction o...
This paper provides a comprehensive process that investigates daylighting performance with regards to museum lighting (adequate lux levels versus safe light exposure) and visual comfort requirements (no glare or sunlight) in the UAE traditional courtyard buildings that were converted into heritage museums. The study used several methods such as sit...
In this article, we present a new calculation procedure that is based on contrast of obstacles along the road. We have developed a methodology to calculate the contrast of obstacles from the perspective of the driver. Obstacles of various heights relative to the ground were distributed along the lateral and longitudinal directions of the road. Usin...
This paper investigates how daylight performs in traditional UAE buildings that were turned into museums with specific focus on museum lighting requirements and effect on artefacts. The study used several methods such as on-site measurements, data collection and analysis, and computer simulation. It depended on the climate-based daylighting metric...

In this research, novel solutions are proposed to solve the problem of excessive heat gain through atria by integrating the top layer with semi-transparent photovoltaics system to shade the atria and convert the incoming solar radiation into electrical energy instead of thermal energy. The PV layer heated by absorbing incoming radiation will be cooled by different configurations which could remove/reduce heat gain into buildings and in the meantime enhance performance of PV.
Improving luminous environment in museum buildings in UAE for more effective and protection of valuable artifacts displays
