Introduction
I worked at the Donders Institute (DCC), Radboud University, NL. I use experimental methods, such as eye-tracking and word naming RTs, to investigate (late) bilingual phonetic categorical representations and their role in lexical retrieval from orthography and from the acoustic signal. I developed a bilingual perception measure of lexical distances I called interlanguage normalized Levenshtein distances (inLd). I am currently working at UFJ as Assistant Professor.

Studies in bilingualism have shown that words activate form-similar neighbors in both first (L1) and second (L2) languages. Accordingly, we hypothesized that the degree of form similarity between L1–L2 word pairs causes a proportional amount of prosodic transfer in L2 speech production. Thus, cognate pairs L1–L2 which bear lexical stress in the sam...

In this paper we investigated how L1 word stress affects L2 word naming for cognates and non-cognates in two lexical stress languages, Brazilian Portuguese (BP, L1) and American English (AE, L2). In Experiment 1, BP-AE bilinguals named a mixed list of disyllabic moderate frequency words in L1 (Portuguese) and L2 (English). In Experiment 2, Portugue...
Neste artigo, buscamos investigar, através de uma pesquisa empírica e revisão da literatura, os possíveis fatores da relação escola-família que repercute na apreciação dos alunos pela escola, bem como em resultados de sucesso escolar. Contou-se com duas escolas como locus de observação, uma estadual, cujo os anos escolares foram os 6º e 9º anos, e...
This study intends to investigate the duration of American English vowels as produced by males and by females who were first language (L1) and second language (L2) speakers of the language. Results showed that females produced longer vowels than males both in L1 and in L2 speech, which was solely an effect of sex, while no interaction of speech nat...
For about four decades, phonological theories have claimed that word stress assignment depends on the word’s syllabic phonotactic complexity in relation to syllabic position. This study analyzes the phonotactic implications for word stress Brazilian Portuguese. After creating a phonotactic corpus and applying Random Forest modeling, phonotactic dis...
Although word stress is an inherent property of each word, it is not yet well understood how word stress is encoded in the representation of a word, or how and when it is retrieved during word processing. In this thesis, I considered the processes of L1 and L2 spoken word recognition, word production, and printed word naming, to assess the role tha...
On-line use of subphonemic correlates for lexical stress on native and non-native visual word recognition The use of lexical stress in auditory word recognition is very often accounted to occur later than segmental information. However, spectral information (e.g. the degree of reduction, which is language specific) seems to be an attribute of stres...

Finding large numbers of target items for phonetic and phonological experiments can be a time-consuming and error-prone task. Using freely available tools and data, we have generated a bilingual corpus with the specific aim of investigating the processing and perception of stress in second-language (L2) words. Normalized Levenshtein distances betwe...
Translation equivalents with form overlap, also called cognates, have been argued to be co-activated during bilingual language processing. However, the influence of congruence or incongruence of word stress on cognates has not yet been investigated. This PhD project has investigated this issue by means of various research methodologies, such as cor...

This study investigates the acquisition of word stress in English (L2) by Brazilian Portuguese (BP or L1) learners. According to Dijkstra & van Heuven (1998), words activate form-similar neighbors in both L1 and L2. We hypothesized that the processing of cognate words with stress on the same syllable in L1 and L2 should be facilitated, while the pr...
Este texto traz reflexões a respeito do processo de tradução com fundamentos da Análise de Discurso. O que se almeja é prover argumentos contra o efeito da ilusão de transparência da linguagem sustentado por teorias estruturalistas de tradução e defender que o sujeito tradutor é também um leitor especial que, através da tradução, se torna autor de...
Abstract:
This is a preliminary study in which we investigate the acquisition of English as a second language (L2) word stress by native speakers of Brazilian Portuguese (BP, L1). 1, 2 We present results of a multiple-choice –forced choice perception test in which native speakers of American English and native speakers of Dutch judged the productio...
English with Brazilian melody? The acquisition of English pre-final stress by Brazilian Portuguese native speakers. Amanda Post da Silveira Leiden University Centre for Linguistics a.post.da.silveira@hum.leidenuniv.nl In the present study we investigate the role of word recognition and stress pattern frequency in second language (henceforth L2) acq...
This is an initial study on the acquisition of English word stress by Brazilian Portuguese learners. The results show that incorrect productions typically had penultimate stress. This phenomenon is the focus of our present investigation. Two major factors are likely to be influencing these inaccurate productions: (i) the high frequency of penultima...
Neste estudo, investigamos as estratégias de reparo aplicadas ao padrão de acento primário do
Inglês, no processo de aquisição, por falantes nativos de português brasileiro (PB). Para esse
propósito, utilizamos a Teoria da Otimidade Conexionista (COT), a partir dos estudos de Bonilha
(2004) como sua base teórica. A COT, além de prever a interação d...
