The progressive feminization of migrations has not resulted in an increase in the social and political participation of migrant women in host societies. This project aims to create an internationally validated material to mainstream the inclusion of Sexual and Gender-Related Violence (SGRV) topic within different disciplines university courses, through an innovative teaching technique, the Photovoice (PhV).
Funded by the Society for Community Research and Action, 27th Division of the American Psychological Association (APA) (SCRA community mini-grant 2018-04).
This project emerges from a double necessity we have identified in two different areas. On the one hand, we are aware of a low community involvement of African women in Seville, Spain. This fact has as a consequence their invisibility and their lack of representation in social organizations and community projects. It also strengthens stereotypes about African women as passive agents with no voice, which can be internalized by them, hindering their own empowerment process.
On the other hand, we have also identified the necessity of introducing non-hegemonic feminist perspectives in higher education. In this vein, we are developing a project to explore gender knowledge and practices in grade and master students at the University of Seville. This project is based on Photovoice as a participatory pedagogical tool, in order to promote critical thinking from feminism and to increase gender equity in the University. This experience has showed us the importance of integrating de-colonial and post-colonial perspectives in order to build a more inclusive feminist approaches in the academy.
