Increasingly bottled Natural Mineral Water (NMW) is proposed as a healthy and safe alternative to supply water. However, tap supply water often comes from aquifers (TGW), even from the same aquifers as NMW, sharing the exact formation mechanisms and mineralization processes. Therefore, it is hypothesized that NMW and TGW cannot be distinguished. Th...

Abstract Simulatingflow through multilayer aquifer systems is essential for groundwater management applications such evaluating natural recharge, assessing managed aquifer recharge (MAR), the characterization of surface water–groundwater interactions, and groundwater pollution risk analysis. However, dealing with flow through variably saturated por...
The artificial lighting of caves adapted for touristic visits, leads to the appearance and propagation of a complex community of phototrophic organisms known as “lampenflora”. Formed mainly by algae and cyanobacteria, they produce the degradation of the colonized substrates and decrease the show value of the caves. This phenomenon became famous wor...
Las Tablas de Daimiel National Park is one of Spain's most representative groundwater‐dependent ecosystems. Under natural conditions, water inflows combined brackish surface water from River Gigüela with freshwater inputs from River Guadiana and the underlying aquifer. Since the mid‐1970s, aquifer overexploitation caused the desiccation of the wetl...

The 2005-2009 period was very dry in the area and the water inputs were scarce. For a long time, treated wastewater spilled to a ditch was the only input in the northern area of the Park. This water was sampled in the spring of 2008 along the ditch, in order to characterize the evaporative process by means of stable water isotopes.
A multivariate analysis approach has been developed in order to explain the observed variability in soil chemistry at Las Tablas de Daimiel National Park (TDNP). The overall aim is to study the impact of climate change on groundwater resources in wetlands with semi-arid climate based on the field site Doñana National Park. General objectives to match this aim are the measurement and estimation of groundwater recharge using precision weighing lysimeter monitoring, and their dependence on meteorological, hydrogeological and soil parameters. The recharge estimations and their dependence on measured meteorological parameters will be used to generate prognostic recharge time series based on temperature and precipitation data simulated by Climatic Models. The impact of the prognosticated changes of recharge on groundwater resources and selected surface water levels will be studied based on numerical groundwater flow models at different spatio-temporal scales. The internationalization of the monitoring results is another general aim and will be performed by integration of the measured data into the Singular Scientific and Technological Infrastructure of Doñana Biological Station (DBS), the responsible Institute for Research of the Spanish Council for Scientific Research (CSIC) state in Seville.
