We present the CREATTIVE3D dataset of human interaction and navigation at road crossings in virtual reality. The dataset has three main breakthroughs: (1) it is the largest dataset of human motion in fully-annotated scenarios (40 hours, 2.6 million poses), (2) it is captured in dynamic 3D scenes with multivariate – gaze, physiology, and motion – da...

Studying spatio-temporal data is essential to understand the processes of the real world. However, the design of effective visualizations to explore spatio-temporal data is not a straightforward task due to the inherent multidimensional aspects of the data. In this paper, we explore the usage of polymorphous glyphs (i.e. glyphs that change shapes a...

Over recent years, we witnessed an astonishing growth in production and consumption of Linked Data (LD), which contains valuable information to support decision-making processes in various application domains. In this context, data visualization plays a decisive role in making sense of the large volumes of data created every day and in effectively...

Faced with the ever-increasing number of scientific publications, researchers struggle to keep up, find and make sense of articles relevant to their own research. Scientific open archives play a central role in helping deal with this deluge, yet keyword-based search services often fail to grasp the richness of the semantic associations between arti...

The Web of Linked Open Data (LOD) provides access to a great number of dynamic datasets containing valuable information to support decision-making processes in diverse application domains while being publicly accessible and up-to-date. While information visualization techniques are useful to explore, analyze, and explain relationships within LOD da...

Collaborations between artists is very frequent in music industry and data analysis can help understand the impact of collaborative projects on artists' careers. In this paper, we propose an incremental and multimodal visualization to support the exploration of artists' discography and collaborations. Visualization techniques are used here to suppo...

This paper focuses on the fundamental role played by annotations to support provenance analysis in visual exploration processes of large datasets. Particularly, we investigate the use of annotations during the visual exploration of semantic datasets assisted by chained visualization techniques. In this paper, we identify three potential uses of ann...

The unprecedented mobilization of scientists, consequent of the COVID-19 pandemics, has generated an enormous number of scholarly articles that is impossible for a human being to keep track and explore without appropriate tool support. In this context, we created the Covid-on-the-Web project, which aims to assist the access, querying, and sense mak...

Although immersive virtual environments have been used for years for training and learning purposes (e.g., flight and surgery simulators), the effects of using VR devices on simulation sessions are yet to be understood. In this work, we explore the effects of different VR devices on virtual environments developed for training, focusing on perceptio...

Association rule mining often leads the analyst into a rough rummaging process to identify rules that are relevant to understand specific problems. We propose a visualization interface to assist the rule selection process and evaluate it on an RDF knowledge graph derived from the COVID-19 Open Research Dataset. The user interface supports data expl...

Visualization techniques are useful tools to explore data by enabling the discovery of meaningful patterns and causal relationships. The discovery process is often exploratory and requires multiple views to support analyzing different or complementary perspectives to the data. In this context, analytic provenance shows great potential to understand...
Thesis
The research field of urban mobility aims at the observation and design of human trips within an urban environment, which information supports decision-making and problem solving within public policies. In this context, there are many experts -- not necessarily transportation specialists -- that need to handle more or less standardized urban data t...

Daily mobility data describes individual displacements over 24-hours periods and are an important source of information to understand the real rhythm of a city, to provide appropriate transportation policies, and to support investment decisions. Geovisualization researchers have designed multiple coordinated views environments, combining spatial an...

Animated maps are widely used for representing shifting densities. Though there is evidence that animations can provide better memory recall than static charts, it could be a consequence of using better techniques for animation than for static representations. However, the lack of control makes them frustrating for users, while animated choropleth...

Using virtual environments (VEs) is a safer and cost-effective alternative to executing dangerous tasks, such as training firefighters and industrial operators. Immersive virtual reality (VR) combined with game aspects have the potential to improve the user experience in the VE by increasing realism, engagement, and motivation. This article investi...

Every year there’s more than 700,000 work accidents in Brazil. To address their consequences, governments and companies spend more than 30 billion dollars a year. To reduce these accidents, we propose the use of VR simulators to assess capability for safe behavior among workers. In a typical simulation session, the user wears a head-mounted display...

Thousands of people die or become invalid every year after a work accident. While the availability of safety equipment is one of the causes, especially in developing countries, behavioral issues caused by psychosocial factors are the most to blame. In this manuscript, we introduce the use of immersive VR simulators to preventively reduce accidents...
