I am analysing animated e-books from a multimodal perspective but do not have any background in sound/music or cinema, so I am struggling with the basics of describing the sounds. Any good primer of the types of effects/music and their role in audio-visual texts?

I feel recently the term multimodality has been used as a synonym to multimodal social semiotics, but I am wondering if I can claim that. Also how to understand the relationship between systemic functional linguistics and social semiotics? Can I consider SFL as the grammar of language, while Kress and van Leeuwen's grammar of visual design would be the equivalent in visual texts, both used to (theoretically) deconstruct the meanings of the texts?
Question
I investigate digital literature and children's meaning-making when engaging with these texts. My interest is on the socio-cultural perspective on meaning-making. I've read some chapters here and there and papers, but I'd like to start forming a bigger picture of Vygotsky's work.
