People with autism experience the world differently to other people (NAS, 2016) whereby ordinary sensory experiences (light, sound) and meeting new and unfamiliar people and places can be challenging (PASPARTA Publishing, 2014) making the external world seem overwhelming (NAS, 2016). Experiences of sensory overload, “the negative mental state that results from excessive stimulation or arousal” (Kopec, 2012, p. 4) from work and public environments contribute significantly to barriers (said to be greater than other those of disabilities (Annabi et al, 2019)) experienced by the autistic population. This can “cause stress, anxiety, and possibly physical pain” often resulting in “withdrawal, challenging behaviour or meltdown"(NAS, 2016).
The mitigation of these barriers may help employment and social prospects for the autistic population. This research proposes a digital solution delivered in an immersive format, to support and facilitate self-management of daily sensory experiences.
