Throughout history, thousands of different kinds of film formats, emulsions and colour systems have been used, to reproduce natural colours and as mean of expression for specific characters and scenes. In recent years, the advent of digital mediums has improved post-production technology and the film restoration process. Moreover, the support migra...

Today, color reproduction techniques are among the most studied and fascinating topic in cinema studies and film restoration. In this study, we propose the use of a tool called movie barcode in order to represent the chromatic variation of a whole film in a single image. The movie barcode is a graph where all the colors used in each film frame are...
Chapter
The identification and restoration of photographic and cinematographic films are often needed as they can undergo severe deterioration, aging, and color fading. Moreover, films also have to keep up with quick technological changes. In this context, knowing the material that composes the film is fundamental to restore the chromatic characteristics t...

Digital image processing is at the base of everyday applications aiding humans in several fields, such as underwater monitoring, analysis of cultural heritage drawings, and medical imaging for computer-aided diagnosis. The starting point of all such application regards the image enhancement step. A desirable image enhancement step should simultaneo...

Nowadays cinematographic frame restoration is the mere use of commercial software performed manually by operators trained basically on them. In this work, we propose an alternative unsupervised method for contrast restoration that can be used as kick-off step in the enhancement pipeline or to perform a complete restoration. The proposed approach is...

Since its invention in the nineteenth century, cinema has become one of the most important media of popular culture, becoming a fundamental part of our historical memory. Even with the advent of the digital, many directors prefer to shot movies on the analog support and in many festivals films are still projected using the traditional instruments....

Colours in cultural heritage are not only means of expression, but also materials with physical and chemical properties. Since the beginning of the current century, colorimetry has become a fundamental field aiming at restoring, preserving and valorising the art works. There are different colorimetric applications in cultural heritage (eg, from lig...

The role of lighting in museums has a fundamental importance. Light influences the perception of colours and space in the collections on display, therefore, any type of lighting must be adequately analysed to confirm the suitability and undistorted colour rendering of the illuminated objects. A two-stage perceptual test was carried out for this pur...

Since the beginning of this century we are assisting to a crucial step in the domain of cinema: the transition from analogic to digital. The computed generated imagery substituted the early developed special effects on film and the use of smartphones and digital devices took the place of old Super8 formats. In this context, film restoration passes...

A precise and shared description of gemstones color could greatly help their classification and market evaluation, and the key to develop an efficient color evaluation system for gemstones is the creation of a common descriptive language and assessment method. Nowadays, there is a lack of standards for the determination of color of gemstones, and t...

This chapter presents an approach to unsupervised digital movie restoration. The approach is based on the idea of recovering the appearance of color instead of the original color signal. The rationale behind this choice is that very often the original color reference is missing in old films, and new films or digital coding can be subject to importa...

We present an alternative approach for the quality assessment of the digital restoration of a degraded film. Instead of summarizing the film quality by an unique value, here we propose a set of basic measures that account for different film visual features. These measures describe over time global and local properties of the film, like brightness,...

This paper describes the digital acquisition and restoration of a Super 8 documentary on the origins of citizens’ awareness on paper recycling in the city of Brescia, Lombardy, northern Italy. This film is currently stored in Fondazione ASM archives, and its acquisition is part of a larger project of preservation of industrial memories in Italy. He...

In this work, we discuss and present different techniques for film colour summarization together with a preliminary colorimetric study. The aim of this project is to combine the frames of different videos, reducing them to just one image of chromatic significance. This elaboration is made through two different methods: the movie barcodes and long e...

Color rendering is defined as the "effect of an illuminant on the color appearance of objects by conscious or subconscious comparison with their color appearance under a reference illuminant" [1]. A Color Rendering Index (CRI) aims to indicate through one or more values the range of the color variation of an object after changes in the illumination...

In this work, we present the digitization and restoration of a 1980's Super 8 documentary, with the use of an unsupervised restoration software: the ACE (Automatic Color Equalization) algorithm. Since for old films the reference is missing in most of the cases, the innovation introduced by this algorithm is the idea of restoring the appearance of c...

Using reflectance spectra allows to compare the pigment mixtures in paintings. In order to improve the actual subjective spectral comparison, we propose to use spectral similarity measures. The Kullback-Leibler spectral Pseudo-Divergence (KLPD) is selected due to his expected metrological properties. The comparison between a subjective assessment a...

Classic examples in which the spatial distribution of a scene plays an important role in the color appearance are the optical illusions. We aim to study if the spatial arrangement of a scene may influence the final color appearance under different illuminants and thus if it should consider it in its computation.

The aim of this project is to improve the research in the field of film/movie digital restoration.
