The safe long-term storage or disposal of both existing and future nuclear wastes is of paramount importance in protecting the environment. Vitrification, cement encapsulation, and incorporation into ceramics are possible immobilization routes. Vitrification has long provided the nuclear industry with a safe long-term conditioning technology for radioactive wastes. A suitable glass host is used to dissolve nuclear wastes to form a glassy (vitreous) homogenous product that can be cast into suitable forms. Borosilicate glass has become the first choice worldwide for the immobilization of nuclear wastes. The main advantages of the Vitrification route include the fact that glass can be easily processed at relatively low temperatures, glass is very tolerant to variations in waste composition and exhibits reasonable chemical durability.
