Ethnobotany is the study and investigation of how people of a particular tribe, culture or region use native plants in that area. In terms of plant biodiversity, Iran is one of the richest regions in Southwest Asia. Iran is one of the leading countries in ethnobotanical knowledge, due to the variety of medicinal plants in the country; natives o...

Pollen and seed micro-morphological features of six species of Polygala distributed in Iran were examined using light (LM) and scanning electron microscope (SEM). The results show a great pollen morphological variation, which provides helpful data for species delimitation in Polygala. The pollen grains are monad, radially symmetrical, isopolar, pol...

A new species, Polygala guilanica (Polygalaceae), is described from Kooh-Roubar, Gasht-Roodkhan protected area in W Guilan province, N Iran. The new species is distinguished based on its prostrate stem; small, lanceolate, ovate and rhombic, sessile leaves; tiny pink-white flowers in lax terminal racemes; 6 or 8 stamens with sessile anthers, a filif...

The genus Polygala L. belongs to Polygalaceae, includes herbaceous, annual to perennial herbs with alternative leaves and zygomorphic bisexual flowers. This genus comprises more than 500 species in the world. It has eight representatives in the flora of Iran, distributed in Hyrcanian, Irano-Turanian and Khaliji-Omani regions. In this study, leaf an...

Polygala mazandaranica is a new species collected from the Mirzakoochak forest in Amol, Mazandaran Province, North Iran. Non-anastomotic nerves of inner sepals, two-lobed stigma, subsessile capsule and three-lobed caruncle of the seed identify the newly collected species. It is similar to P. anatolica and P. platyptera but differs by its habitat an...
