The article describes a unique scientific installation Vega-Science, which is designed to support operations with data from ultra-large distributed archives of the IKI-Monitoring center (http://ckp.geosmis.ru/) for the collective use of systems for archiving, processing and analyzing satellite data. The system was created in 2012, and currently mor...
A geometric technique is introduced to estimate the height of volcanic eruption columns using the generally discarded near-limb portion of geostationary imagery. Such oblique observations facilitate a height-by-angle estimation method by offering close-to-orthogonal side views of eruption columns protruding from the Earth ellipsoid. Coverage is res...
Supplement Table S1.
In a companion paper (Horváth et al., 2021), we introduced a new technique to estimate volcanic eruption column height from extremely oblique near-limb geostationary views. The current paper demonstrates and validates the technique in a number of recent eruptions, ranging from ones with weak columnar plumes to subplinian events with massive umbrell...
Supplement Animations 1-8.
The paper marks the 15-th anniversary of the Wildfires Monitoring Information System of the Federal Forestry Agency (ISDM-Rosleskhoz). Creation and development of the system was partaken by many organizations, including the Aerial Forest Protection Central Base (Avialesookhrana), Space Research Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences (IKI), Ce...

Regular onboard calibration of satellite data is of great practical importance for the processing of remote sensing information. For flight cross-calibration it is proposed to use a geostationary satellite as a reference to calibrate polar orbiting satellites data on the example of the “Canopus–V–IR” and Himawary satellites. Authors use data from c...
The information system "Remote monitoring of Kamchatka and Kuril Islands volcanic activity" (VolSatView IS) was created in 2011. The system provides specialists with access to a variety of information, including long-term archives of remote sensing data needed for remote monitoring of volcanic activity, requiring only a web browser to use the syste...
The object of this work is to develop web tools, which provide remote services necessary for disaster management purposes in domain of satellite Earth observation (EO) of vegetation areal, primarily forest or agricultural areas damaged by wild fires. The main idea for application of developed web tools is to provide targeted users with estimation i...
The volcanoes of Kamchatka are the most active in the world. Annually, from 3 to 7 volcanoes produce eruptions, during which the explosions eject ash to 10-15 km above sea level, and ash clouds spread thousands of kilometers from volcanoes. Strenuous volcanic activity could cause ash falls in towns and settlements, destruction of forests and commun...
The paper describes the forest monitoring information system Vega-Primorie developed by IKIZ LLC and Space Research Institute RAS in cooperation with Far Eastern Center of SRC Planeta and Wildlife Society ANCO. Vega-Primorie is intended for complex remote monitoring of Primorie forests under the pilot project led by the Primorie Region government....
The paper discusses current capabilities of Forest Fires Remote Monitoring Information System (ISDM-Rosleskhoz) of the Federal Agency for Forestry put into operation in 2005. ISDM-Rosleskhoz enables delivery of operational uniform (comparable) information required for monitoring forest fires and their aftermaths on the whole territory of the Russia...
Nowadays various Earth observation satellite systems are widely used in solving of different scientific and applied problems. One of the biggest areas of their use is the development of various dedicated remote monitoring information systems aimed at continual acquisition of information about different processes, objects and phenomena. A significan...
The paper describes the architecture and capabilities of the center for collective use (CCU) "IKI-Monitoring" launched by the Space Research Institute of Russian Academy of Sciences (IKI RAS), designed to provide access to specialists conducting various research and development projects to the archives of satellite data and information obtained on...
In the present work, the possibilities of the process control library commonbat.pm realized in PERL are examined. This program product is intended for constructing efficient distributed systems of processing information and control over their functioning. The basic operational objects and concepts of the library are discussed: session, flow and tas...
This paper presents an overview of current satellite-based fire mapping activities at several institutions in Russia that
provide operational fire monitoring at federal and regional levels. The current operational systems are based on data from
the Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) and the TIROS Operational Vertical Sounder (TOVS) on...
The review of the Russian and foreign literature analyzes the capabilities of systems for satellite detection and monitoring of forest fires and considers the requirements imposed on these systems
and their basic elements. Geoinformation components of these systems are considered along with algorithms for processing of satellite images in order to...
The paper considers the possibility; of including satellite data and the results of their processing in various information systems. An approach to the construction of satellite data archives is presented, which has the ability to simplify considerably the solution of the problem. Examples are given of the use of this approach in the solution of sp...
The paper analyses the experience obtained during the creation and exploitation of a system to receive, process and disseminate satellite data, covering the whole of the Russian territory, in support of the forest fire services. The system was based on the collection and partial processing of data from regional observations. The modern capabilities...
The experience obtained during the organization and operation of a system for the on-line reception, processing, and dissemination of satellite data covering the entire territory of Russia for the forest fire protection service is analyzed. The system is based on the collection and partial processing of data by observation regions. The present-day...
This paper discusses the possibilities of building satellite data archives that provide operational access to data for the remote users.
The paper presents a brief description of the open system for operational access to satellite data, created by the Space Research Institute, Russian Academy of Sciences.
The various tasks of satellite data pre-processing, that could be carried out on local receiving stations are discussed. Several possibilities of their realization are analyzed. The article is based on the experience obtained from development and maintenance of data processing system for the SCANOR image receiving and processing personal station.
Multi-functional MS-Windows 3.1 application for satellite images data processing and a system for it's modification are discussed.
A possibility for high-precision (up to 1 pixel) geographical referencing of AVHRR data is shown. Some fast algorithms for latitude-longitude grid and standard projection building are discussed. An application for MS-Windows 3.1 which includes these algorithms is described.
A program for the NOAA AVHRR data processing using personal computer is described. This program enables: data reprocessing, computation of different temperature parameters, computation of vegetation index, estimation of the water-vapour concentration for the cloudless atmosphere, operations with 2D histograms, development of the classification algo...
The paper is concerned with the problem of the generation of large-scale vortex structures of the tropical cyclone type under conditions simulating tropical depression turbulence. It is assumed that the mesoscale moist convection arising at the locally unstable stratification profile is the main source of turbulence. The results of the study indica...
