Introduction
I'm a benthic ecologist interested in fouling communities of man-made structures as well as in natural hard-bottom communities in high latitudes. My current research is focused on developmental patterns of fouling communities inhabiting both artificial and natural substrates in the aphotic zone of Arctic seas. I'm also a PhD student, working on a thesis about top-down and bottom-up control in the epibiotic community of red algae Phycodrys rubens in the White Sea.

The ten-year succession of the biofouling community inhabiting subsea engineering structures at a depth of 80-90 m was described on the basis of repeated video filming on the southwestern shelf of the Sea of Okhotsk. A general scheme of the stages of development of the macrofouling community in steps of 1-2 years has been compiled both for the inta...
Despite a large number of studies, a detailed overall picture of benthic communities zonation in the Arctic fjords is currently lacking. Our study aimed to find out whether there is a universal model for the distribution of benthic communities based on the structural features of the fjords. We examined benthic macrofaunal communities in fjords with...
Human expansion to the sea gathers pace and so does the diversity of new substrates exposed to biofouling. Various subsea production structures often serve unintentionally as artificial reefs attracting dozens of fouling species. In this presentation we are showing what a 10-year-old succession in a biofouling community on the subsea production com...
Biofouling of artificial substrates is a well-known phenomenon that can negatively impact offshore industry operations as well as data collection in the ocean. Fouling communities worldwide have mostly been studied within the top 50 m of the ocean surface, while biofouling below this depth remains largely underreported. Existing methods used to stu...
The species composition and structure of bottom communities with a predominance of bivalve mollusks of
the genus Portlandia, which are widespread on the shelf of the Russian Arctic, were analyzed. Molecular genetic analysis confirmed that Portlandia aestuariorum and P. arctica are valid species; it had been shown that
all P. arctica tested from dif...
Benthic fauna of the Oga Bay (the Kara Sea, Novaya Zemlya) was studied in 20152016 during the IO RAS expeditions on RV "Akademik Mstislav Keldysh". 5 grab stations (15 samples) at depths of 70140 m were sampled. Three macrobenthic communities consecutively replaced each others from the inner near-glacier part of the gulf towards the outher slope. T...
Facilitation by foundation species commonly structures terrestrial and marine communities. Intraspecific variation in individual properties of these strong facilitators can affect the whole suite of the dependent taxa. Marine macroalgae often act as ecosystem engineers, providing shelter and substrate for numerous associated organisms. Epibiosis of...
The dominance of one particular species (or species of one genera) in the geographically remote communities was thoroughly described by Gunnar Thorson (Thorson, 1958) in his theory of parallel communities. While studying soft-bottom macrobenthic associations of Russian Arctic we discovered a somewhat similar pattern. А bivalve protobranchian mollus...
Alongside with predation and competition facilitation defines and maintains community structure. Intraspecific variation of species abundances and composition in the communities associated with strong facilitators (foundation species) is studied much less than interspecific. Coastal and intertidal macroalgae often function as foundation species in...
Benthic fauna in Tsivolki Bay (Novaya Zemlya Archipelago, Kara Sea) has been studied during the voyage of the R/V Professor Shtokman in 2013 and 2014. A peculiar feature of the bay is the presence of the Serp i Molot glacier in its inner part, which determines the extremely high content of suspended particles in the water column. The bay is divided...
The degree of development and operability of the indicators for the Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD) using Descriptor 1 (D1) Biological Diversity was assessed. To this end, an overview of the relevance and degree of operability of the underlying parameters across 20 European countries was compiled by analysing national directives, legisla...
