Individuals with schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and depression are at increased rate for weight gain due to the side effects from treatment using atypical antipsychotics and mood stabilizers. Other correlates of severe mental illness including a sedentary lifestyle and social isolation can also exacerbate this weight gain. Obesity is a known risk factor for developing depression; thus the bidirectional nature of the relationship between obesity and depression warrants the importance of treating them simultaneously.
