While ethics are recognized as an integral part of information systems (IS) research, many questions about the role of ethics in research practice remain unanswered. Our report responds to this emerging set of concerns with a broad and integrative account of five perspectives on ethics in IS research and design science research (DSR) in particular....

One of the open methodological concerns for design science research (DSR) in information systems is how to think about and deal with the notion of context. This paper takes an important step toward clarifying the notion of context and elaborates how it can be dealt with from a DSR perspective. In particular, we present a coherent theoretical accoun...

A comprehensive understanding of how to achieve relevance and practical impact with our work remains elusive within the information systems (IS) community. While we know that finding or constructing important research problems sets the bar for the potential impact that research can have, we know little about how to support research problem assessme...
Presentation

The presentation is the summary of the inaugural lecture at the University of Leipzig by Conny Melzer, which was held on 21.05.2021. It was conceived together with Alexander Herwix. It addresses the potentials of an Innovation Hub Inclusion in connection with the design-based research approach. At the same time, the lecture is also a call for colla...

How to increase the chances of overall positive, rather than negative, impacts from new technology developments is expected to be a key challenge for the future of design-oriented research. In this context, we argue that a thorough understanding of the ethical dimension of research and technology is needed so that researchers can make an informed a...

The support and scaling up of successful sustainable development and nature conservation practices is a major challenge that needs to be addressed to support a smoother transition to a more sustainable society. In this paper, we present an exploratory case study of the global learning partnership "PANORAMA Solutions for a Healthy Planet", which dev...

Tool support for design science research (DSR) is increasingly recognized by the DSR community as an important but neglected area of research. Extrapolating from the achievements of tool support for more established research approaches, tool support for DSR promises to lower the barriers for the delivery of more rigorous, comparable, and, thus, rel...

The information systems (IS) field contains a rich body of knowledge on approaches, methods, and frameworks that supports researchers in conducting design science research (DSR). It also contains some consensus about the key elements of DSR projects—such as problem identification, design, implementation, evaluation, and abstraction of design knowle...

This study presents insights from a systematic literature review of design science in IS. A lack of agreement on how to classify and demarcate design science from behavioral science research led to the iterative development of a theoretically-grounded, encompassing framework of knowledge contributions in the larger context of general scientific inq...
Conference Paper
Research Proposal
It has been recognized that in times of digitalization and rapidly changing business environments Business process management will need to question and evolve its core ideas to stay innovative and relevant. Thus, the presented research project aims to synthesize existing theoretical perspectives on business processes into a novel and unified concep...

The Innovation Hub Inclusion is a digital and analog experimental space that is currently being developed at the Universities of Leipzig (project leader C. Melzer & A. Herwix) and Cologne. In the future, people with different perspectives and expertise will work together to find solutions to challenges of inclusion. The Innovation Hub Inclusion is characterized by flexible and dynamic ways of working and is platform-based. The goal is bringing together scientists, students and partners from the field in innovative teaching, research or exchange formats in order to test new approaches to solutions in the context of application-oriented research. The Innovation Hub Inclusion is currently being developed using a design-based research approach. Anyone who would like to be actively involved in the development can contact Conny Melzer ======== Der Innovation Hub Inklusion ist ein digitaler und analoger Experimentierraum, der derzeit an den Universitäten Leipzig (Projektleitung C. Melzer & A. Herwix) und Köln entwickelt wird.

Design-based research is already an established approach in natural science research. In the field of educational sciences, especially didactics are engaged in research in this area (in Germany). Inclusive education - especially in the context of special education research - is a challenge that requires innovative developments in order to be implemented in a demand-oriented and goal-oriented way. We see the design-based research approach as a very good way to advance such developments in a research-, theory- and practice-based way. In this project, we are promoting the exchange of researchers who want to advance inclusive education in this way and implement it in a practical way.
