Introduction
I am the Wildlife Engagement Specialist with the Department of Fisheries and Wildlife at Michigan State University (MSU). I work jointly with MSU Extension and the Michigan Department of Natural Resources to communicate and collaborate with stakeholders to develop an engagement program that provides meaningful engagement opportunities for individuals and organizations on applied wildlife management activities in Michigan. I completed my postdoctoral work through the BEACON Center at MSU in science education and outreach, and my Ph.D. research at Florida State University focused on ecology, evolution, and conservation of the Pine Barrens Treefrogs. I received a B.S. in Biology from the University of Northern Iowa in 2009.

Range fragmentation poses challenges for species persistence over time and can be caused by both historical and contemporary processes. We combined genomic data, phylogeographical model testing and palaeoclimatic niche modelling to infer the evolutionary history of the Pine Barrens tree frog (Hyla andersonii), a seepage bog specialist, in eastern N...

Contributing to broader impacts is an important aspect of scientific research. Engaging practicing K-12 teachers as part of a research project can be an effective approach for addressing broader impacts requirements of grants, while also advancing researcher and teacher professional growth. Our focus is on leveraging teachers' professional expertis...

The postdoctoral workforce comprises a growing proportion of the science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) community, and plays a vital role in advancing science. Postdoc professional development, however, remains rooted in outdated realities. We propose enhancements to postdoc-centred policies and practices to better align this caree...

The Hardy-Weinberg principle and associated calculations are often challenging for students to learn for three reasons. First, several assumptions need to be understood to correctly apply the principle. Second, a series of calculations are required for proper application. Third, the principle, assumptions, and calculations are often taught separate...

Over the past 25 years a number of instruments have been published that attempt to measure understanding and acceptance of evolution. Science educators have been administering these instruments and reporting results, however, it is not clear these instruments are being used appropriately. The goal of this paper is to review these instruments, notin...

Environmental variation favors the evolution of phenotypic plasticity. For many species, we understand the costs and benefits of different phenotypes, but we lack a broad understanding of how plastic traits evolve across large clades. Using identical experiments conducted across North America, we examined prey responses to predator cues. We quantif...

Early genetic studies in the south-eastern United States provided the foundation for ideas in the field of comparative phylogeography, but few direct comparisons with consistent sampling across taxa exist for this region. We investigate the influence of historical processes and species-level characteristics on phylogeographic structure within four...

Delimiting species is important to every subfield in biology. Templeton's cohesion species concept uses genetic and ecological exchangeability to identify sets of populations that ought to be considered as the same species, and the lack of exchangeability helps determine which populations can be grouped as evolutionarily significant units in conser...

Conference Paper
Background/Question/Methods Phenotypic plasticity is a ubiquitous phenomenon in nature. Over the past several decades, researchers have provided a tremendous number of insights regarding the ecology and evolution of plasticity of species across a wide range of taxa. However, we know relatively little about how these responses have evolved within...

Twenty-one polymorphic microsatellite loci were developed and characterized for the rare Pine Barrens treefrog (Hyla andersonii). This species is found in three disjunct regions of the eastern United States and is con-sidered threatened by each state in which it occurs. In order to elucidate population structure and identify possible declines in th...
