In recent years, the number of publications aimed at reflecting on the impact that new technologies have on the music field has grown. One of the most famous and interesting –although controversial– is the book Retromania by Simon Reynolds (2012). In this work, the author argues that “YouTube's gigantic collective archive” has caused unprecedented...

The present article studies what appears to be a “defect” that arises from the comparison between the music of José de Campderrós - a Catalan composer active in Chile around 1800- and the “great classics” of his time. As explained in the Introduction, such “defect” is his frequent tendency to include sections with very few modulations or even witho...

This article is divided into two parts. In the first part the importance of the baroque guitar of five courses in colonial Chile is documented mainly in Santiago (the capital) but also in other cities and villages of the country. The data was gathered by the author after several years of systematic work in different archives and collections such as...
This article deals with the circulation of instrumental music between Spain and the New World at the end of the eighteenth century, focusing on Madrid, Mexico City and Lima as main urban centres. By analysing archival documents preserved in these cities, I intend to show that the baroque guitar music composed and copied in Madrid was also intended...
Musical performers and performing processes are relatively new objects of study if we compare them with composers and works, categories that have been at the centre of musicological concerns for a long time: so much so that in a relatively recent publication, An Introduction to Music Studies, ed. J. P. E. Harper-Scott and Jim Samson (Cambridge: Cam...

This is the first study about the musical practice in convents of Colonial Chile on the basis of new data collected in the archive of the convent of La Victoria in Santiago. It considers historical and musical aspects such as the image of the nun musician in traditional and postmodern historiography, her social status during the colonial period, th...
This article hypothesizes that the overly negative view of the music of the colonial period in Chile is rooted in the nationalistic ideology of the 19th and 20th centuries, which viewed that period as one of submission to a foreign power. It goes on to suggest that this ideology had a determining role in the creation of the dual image that has been...

Early Music 32.3 (2004) 369-382
Several explanations have traditionally been put forward for the scarcity of information about music in Chile during the colonial period: Chile at that time did not have vice-regal status, and therefore its towns did not develop to the same degree as major cities in other areas of South America; in addition, numerous...
