Introduction
Alejandro Quintanar studies the pantropical family of trees Putranjivaceae (Malpighiales) and the subfamily of grasses Pooideae (Gramineae, Poales), using field work, taxonomy and phylogenetics to improve the classification of these plants, describe and analyse their systematics, evolution and diversity, and promote their conservation. He works at the Royal Botanic Garden of Madrid CSIC, Spain. If you wish to contact him please write to quintanar@rjb.csic.es

We present a preliminary discussion about cauliflory, sexual dimorphism and biogeographic patterns in Drypetes Vahl (Putranjivaceae Endl.), focused on Africa. We also present a taxonomic treatment for two new species of cauliflorous trees of this genus from the rainforests of western Central Africa, one endemic to Gabon and known from six gathering...
To investigate the evolutionary relationships and biogeographical history among the species of Agrostis and allied genera within the subtribe Agrostidinae, we generated a phylogeny based on sequences from nuclear ribosomal DNA (ITS) and three plastid regions ( rpl32‐trnL spacer, rps16‐trnK spacer, and rps16 intron). We also aimed to assess the gene...

Taxon name, country, and next division, voucher (collector, number, and where the specimen is housed), and GenBank accession number for DNA sequences ITS, rps16-trnK, rps16...
Koelerioid grasses (subtribe Aveninae, tribe Poeae; Pooideae) resolve into two major clades, here called Koelerioid Clades A and B. Phylogenetic relationships among koelerioid grasses are investigated using plastid DNA sequences of rpl32-trnL, rps16-trnK, rps16 intron, and ITS regions, focusing on Trisetum, Acrospelion, and some annual species (Ros...
We present an overview of the current status and results of our studies in the family Putranjivaceae (Malpighiales). It comprises dioecious evergreen trees from tropical and subtropical areas of the world, often found in humid evergreen forests with high rainfall regimes, where they are particularly diverse and considered indicators of their conser...
A response is provided to the Rapporteurs’ comments on Proposal 193 to amend the Shenzhen Code . If adopted, Prop. 193 would amend Div. III, Prov. 5 of the Code so as to require a simple majority to approve—as opposed to the current 60% majority to reject (and thus 40% + 1 vote to approve)—General Committee recommendations on conservation, protecti...
The Checklist of the Vascular Plants of the Republic of Guinea (CVPRG) is a specimen-based, expert-validated knowledge product, which provides a concise synthesis and overview of current knowledge on 3901 vascular plant species documented from Guinea (Conakry), West Africa, including their accepted names and synonyms, as well as their distribution...
Background and aims – Specimens of a new tree species in the genus Drypetes (Putranjivaceae) distributed in Cameroon and eastern Nigeria, D. stevartii , were associated with D. verrucosa , another tree species endemic to Gabon, due to its warty fruits and to the overall morphological resemblances of both species.
Material and methods – The present...

Drypetes is a pantropical genus of ca. 210 species, of which 80 are found in forests and savannas throughout sub-Saharan Africa and the Malagasy Region. It has been suggested that the genus is an indicator of good-quality, undisturbed forests. Species of Drypetes are shrubs or medium-sized trees. Leaves are simple, petiolate and present a slightly...
To investigate the evolutionary relationships and biogeographical history among the species of Calamagrostis and other members of subtribe Agrostidinae, Calothecinae, Echinopogoninae, and Paramochloinae, we generated a phylogeny based on DNA sequences from one nuclear ribosomal and three plastid areas (ITS, rpl32‐trnL spacer, rps16‐trnK spacer, and...

The Royal Botanic Garden of Madrid houses a very diverse collection of cultivated plants —trees, shrubs, climbers, and herbs— that come from all the continents of the planet. Around the World in 80 Plants is a guide inspired by the famous novel of Jules G. Verne Around the World in Eighty Days, published in 1873. The visitor is able to visit

There are six species of Bellis inhabiting the Iberian Peninsula, four of their accepted names are typified here. Bellis microcephala Lange, B. perennis L., and B. cordifolia (Kunze) Willk. are lectotypified, while an epitype is designated for B. sylvestris Cirillo. Some diagnostic characters are discussed in order to provide a proper identificatio...

Some authors have recently considered Koeleria lobata (M. Bieb.) Roem. & Schult. to be the correct name for those grasses traditionally named K. splendens C. Presl. Koeleria lobata is in fact the correct name for another species that has been named as K. brevis Steven or K. degenii Domin. Although the clarification of the true identity of K. lobata...
