El hidrógeno es un vector energético que se puede producir utilizando energía eléctrica solar generada por módulos fotovoltaicos (FV) mediante la electrólisis del agua, con la ventaja de no emitir gases de efecto invernadero, dióxido de carbono principalmente, ni consumo de combustibles fósiles por lo que puede ser considerado un proceso amigable con el medio ambiente (proceso “verde”). Mediante la asociación de investigadores de la Universidad de Atacama, Pontificia Universidad Católica de Valparaíso y Universidad Técnica Federico Santa María, se propone implementar un sistema constituido por un módulo FV integrado a un electrolizador alcalino experimental, con el fin de obtener hidrógeno por un método altamente económico. Una vez puesto a punto el sistema, este permitirá recoger información validada relativa a las variables que condicionan su funcionamiento de manera optimizada. De esta manera, se podrá investigar la incidencia que tienen en la eficiencia global del proceso de generación de hidrógeno, tanto el voltaje y potencia máxima de salida del módulo FV como el voltaje de operación del electrolizador bajo la intensa radiación solar que presenta la región de Atacama única en Chile y el mundo. La optimización del proceso deberá permitir alcanzar eficiencias suficientes para los requerimientos de abastecimiento de hidrógeno de una celda de combustible, las cual serán aplicadas a electr movilidad en minería.
