Octopus hubbsorum is an important fisheries resource in the Mexican Pacific and a link among different trophic levels due to its ecological role as both predator and prey. In this study, the spatial variations in the diet, isotopic niche and trophic position of O. hubbsorum were determined by analysing digestive contents along with carbon and nitro...
This research investigates the accumulation of elements, particularly arsenic, in Sargassum horridum, a species known for its capacity to gather toxic elements. The study observed variability in macro and microelement concentrations over time and between growth stages in Sargassum near a Gulf of California phosphorite deposit. Notably, a generalize...
The brown alga Sargassum provides a natural substrate occupied by hydrozoans in shallow marine waters. A global count in 2007 listed 39 epibiotic species of Hydrozoa growing on Sargassum, but more studies have been published since, therefore, an update is timely, particularly due to the increased abundance of Sargassum in the Caribbean. This review...
Context: Establishing the roles that different species play within ecosystems is key to understanding how ecosystems function and determining the feeding relationships among species.

This study analyzed the stomach contents of Cortez damselfish, Stegastes rectifraenum, from two sites in the southern Gulf of California to describe its diet. Stomach contents were described using the prey-specific index of relative importance (%PSIRIi), diet width was calculated with Levin’s index, and trophic position using the R package dietr. W...
Macroalgae availability is thought to be a major driver of the diet of marine herbivores. In subtropical regions, macroalgal biomass is highly seasonal and the diet of herbivores usually varies accordingly. In Sargassum beds in the Gulf of California, Tripneustes depressus and Eucidaris thouarsii dominate the invertebrate fauna and feed on macroalg...
The seasonal and interannual proximate and sterol composition were assessed in two red (Gelidium robustum, Gelidiaceae and Gracilariopsis sjoestedtii, Gracilariaceae), two brown (Ecklonia arborea, Lessoniaceae and Macrocystis pyrifera, Laminariaceae), and two green (Ulva lactuca and Ulva clathrata, Ulvaceae) macroalgae species and the seagrass Phyl...
This study analyzed the spatial variation of stable isotopes (δ15N and δ13C) and the trophic position of three rocky reef fishes, Balistes polylepis, Stegastes rectifraenum and Kyphosus vaigiensis. According to previous feeding studies, these species are categorized as a benthic carnivore, an omnivore, and an herbivore, respectively. Specimens were...
In the Gulf of California; mineral deposits have contributed to high metal contents in coastal environments. This study examined cadmium; lead; copper; zinc; and iron contents in three fish species; Kyphosus vaigiensis (herbivore), Stegastes rectifraenum (omnivore), and Balistes polylepis (carnivore) at two mining sites. Metal concentrations were a...
Massive accumulations of pelagic species of Sargassum have generated recent social, economic and ecological problems along Caribbean shores. In the Mexican Caribbean, these events have prompted the study of diverse biological and ecological aspects of these macroalgae. However, studies on their associated biota, including Hydrozoa, remain scarce. T...

The Mexican Pacific has been the focus of several research expeditions, with 90 species of hydromedusae and more than 200 species of hydroids recorded for the region. However, only a few of these reports include taxonomic descriptions, hindering inferences of the phylogenetic relationships, species boundaries, and diversity of Hydrozoa in Mexican w...
Background and Aims:
In September 2001, the coral reef of the San Lorenzo Channel, La Paz Bay, Gulf of California, Mexico, was affected by the stranding of the oil tank vessel “Lázaro Cárdenas II”. Soon afterwards, hurricane “Juliette” hit the area with strong winds and water movement, disturbing the reef again. After that, three zones could be obs...
The wavy turban snail, Megastraea undosa ( W. Wood), is an important fishery resource along the Mexican Pacific coast and a keystone species in subtropical rocky reefs. Its diet was determined from stomach contents of 125 specimens collected in three rocky reefs of the western coast of the Baja California Peninsula in July and November 2006 and Mar...
Diet of the volcano keyhole limpet Fissurella volcano was determined from stomach contents of 56 specimens collected from two rocky reefs along the west coast of the Baja California Peninsula of Mexico in July and November 2006 and March 2007. We identified 40 taxa, including 27 diatoms, one cyanoprokaryota, eight macroalgae (mainly red algae), one...
The wavy turban snail Megastraea undosa and keyhole limpet Megathura crenulata, two gastropods with commercial importance, five macroalgae, and one seagrass were collected at Bahía Tortugas, Baja California Sur, Mexico, for analysis of stable isotope ratios. The δ13C and δ15N isotope signatures obtained from gastropod muscle tissue were different b...
The fatty acid composition of macrophytes is usually quite stable among different taxonomic groups, and thus, several fatty acids can been used as biomarkers. However, variations between species can be affected by seawater temperature and other ambient factors. With higher annual temperatures, we expect less polyunsaturated fatty acids, and changes...

En arrastres con redes camaroneras, se encontraron 13 especies...
A stomach content analysis was undertaken to determine the changes in the natural diet of the green abalone Haliotis fulgens as they relate to the 1997 to 1998 El Nino event at 2 sites along the central coast of the Baja California Peninsula. The index of relative importance of each identified food item was calculated, and Levin's index was used to...
We evaluated the contribution of beta (β) diversity of macroalgal assemblages in subtropical rocky reefs of the Gulf of California. Seasonal samplings of macroalgae were taken in six sites from 2005 to 2008. We identified 157 species, with a local richness [alpha (α) diversity] between 8 and 38 species, with the lowest values in fall. Additive part...
Seaweed associated to mangrove is important as primary producers, refuge, and feeding areas for invertebrate and fish species. In the peninsula of Baja california the total nomber and distribution of the associated species in these ecosystems was unknown. the objective of this research was to compile the existing information on seaweed species dive...
The brown macroalga Cladostephus spongiosus is reported for the first time from the central Pacific coast of the Baja California Peninsula. Thalli ranged from 3 to 20 cm in length, with the shortest occurring in January ( winter) and the tallest in June ( summer). Reproductive individuals were present in all seasons except autumn, when mean seawate...
Abstract The feasibility of obtaining a similar growth response from juvenile pink abalone Haliotis corrugata at a research laboratory and a hatchery, when using natural feeds was evaluated. Four macroalgae, Egregia menziesii, Eisenia arborea, Macrocystis pyrifera, Gracilaria sp., and the surfgrass Phyllospadix torreyi were used as feeds. Response...
Growth, survival, and tissue biochemical composition of juvenile green abalone Haliotis fulgens were recorded for two temperature regimes simulating the contrasting marine conditions. one as a normal year and the other as all El Nino 1997 to 1998 event during 120 days in the laboratory. Abalones were fed Macrocystis pyrifera or Eisenia arborea. Dur...
Two abalone species: green Haliotis fulgens and yellow Halioti corrugata represent nearly 97% of the total production in the Mexican abalone fishery. It has been assumed that abalone feed on the kelp algae Macrocystis pyrifera. Regional hatcheries use this species as a main source of natural food. M. pyrifera does not occur at the southern limit of...
Growth rates of juvenile Haliotis fulgens (green abalone) were evaluated with four different diets over 106 days. Three diets were based on the algae palm kelp Eisenia arborea, giant kelp Macrocystis pyrifera, and Gelidium robustum, and one on seagrass Phyllospadix torreyi. One artificial diet was used as a control. The best growth rates and specif...
Questions
Question (1)
The measured factors are the concentration of alginate, fucoidan, and trace elements. Also, the reproductive stage of the thallus was considered (thallus non-reproductive, with developing reproductive structures, and reproductive)
I am considering doing a PCA to visualize the relationships among all the factors (including arsenic) and PERMANOVA to determine if there are differences between the possible clusters by reproductive stage.
I thought of making a multiple correlation analysis or using generalized linear models to determine the weight of the cited factors in the concentration of arsenic. However, I am not sure if they are adequate because there is a correlation between arsenic and at least some trace elements.
