The Natural Protected Areas (NPA) network is one of Mexico's main biodiversity conservation strategies. However, comparisons between the biodiversity observed inside and around this conservation instrument have rarely been performed in the country, not even for groups of fauna such as medium and large mammals (weight. 0.5 kg). Aspects of diversity...
Roads cause disturbances to wildlife from the beginning of their construction and once the road is in operation, people usually make use of the habitats, reducing their quality. To this are added the effects caused by light and noise from vehicles. These propagate through the land adjacent to the road causing changes in the fauna's use of the habit...
Deforestation impacts canopy connectivity when landscapes are fragmented due to roads and other types of linear infrastructure. Natural canopy bridges become vital to arboreal animals, especially for animals that are reluctant to use the ground. When canopy regrowth cannot occur, artificial canopy bridges have been implemented to mitigate the conse...
Spatial ecology of jaguar (Panthera onca) outside protected areas in the Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico. Jaguars (Panthera onca) are endangered in several countries and a priority species for conservation action. Despite extensive research efforts in Mexico most studies have been associated with natural protected areas far from human habitation. Because...
There are few highways in Mexico that have built canopy bridges as a mitigation strategy for maintaining connectivity of arboreal fauna. Main target species have been primates, both, howler (Allouatta pigra, A. palliata) and spider monkeys (Atteles geofforyi), as well as several other arboreal priority species such as the kinkajou (Potos flavus), t...
Mammalian carnivores are considered a key group in maintaining ecological health and can indicate potential ecological integrity in landscapes where they occur. Carnivores also hold high conservation value and their habitat requirements can guide management and conservation plans. The order Carnivora has 84 species from 8 families in the Neotropica...
Xenarthrans—anteaters, sloths, and armadillos—have essential functions for ecosystem maintenance, such as insect control and nutrient cycling, playing key roles as ecosystem engineers. Because of habitat loss and fragmentation, hunting pressure, and conflicts with domestic dogs, these species have been threatened locally, regionally, or even across...

The Nuevo Xcan-Playa del Carmen highway in Quintana Roo, bisects the vegetation corridor connecting two Jaguar Conservation Units (JCUs): Yum Balaam (north) and Sian Ka´an (south). The project´s main goal was to describe differential use of available crossing structures (wildlife underpasses and culverts) by mammals present along this highway. We s...
Terrestrial mammal sample completeness curves for the monitoring of the different crossing structures: wildlife underpasses (WU), box culverts (BC), concrete pipes (CP) and both culverts together along the Nuevo Xcan-Playa del Carmen highway.

Six species of felids are distributed across Mexico and all are affected to a greater or lesser extent by the national highway network (377,660 km in length), but the magnitude of its impact on these species is unknown. Part of the issue is the scarce information available spread across the scientific literature, mammal collections records, environ...
ABSTRACT.—The eastern cottontail rabbit (Sylvilagus floridanus; ECR) is highly adaptable to human activities and widely distributed across the Yucatan Peninsula. However, the eastern part of the peninsula, where the Mexican state of Quintana Roo is located, had only marginal records. Herein, we report the collection of one individual and the observ...
Using a GPS satellite collar, we tracked a jaguar close to Playa del Carmen city in Quintana Roo, Mexico from Jan. to Dec. 2013. We observed the jaguar recurrently used a cenote located near the Playa del Carmen city landfill. We searched on two occasions for potential prey items killed by the jaguar and also set two camera traps on the cenote area...
Understanding how jaguars (Panthera onca) adapt to disturbed landscapes, especially urbanized areas, can help us prevent adverse situations, thus reducing conflict, and perhaps even achieve coexistence with these predators. Playa del Carmen, a city located in the middle of a natural corridor linking two jaguar conservation units (JCUs; Sian Ka’an a...
Roads affect wildlife in many ways, with roadkills probably the most conspicuous. In Mexico, there is increasing interest in this effect on wildlife. Together, richness and abundance can be used to predict trends for wild populations, and our study analyzes these variables for rodents killed by vehicles and trapped along a 14-km stretch of an A-typ...
This study is an update of the impact of highways on fauna in Mexico, with an emphasis on how they affect fauna. We present an overview of road construction from pre-Ccolonial times to the present. Highway development began during the industrial revolution and in the last decade has seen a dramatic increase. During 2007 the total length of the nati...
Roads affect wildlife in many ways, and probably the most conspicuous of these is by producing roadkills. In Mexico few studies have addressed this issue. In the present study, we look at the richness and abundance of vertebrate roadkills along a 14 km stretch of the Amozoc-Cantona-Perote highway, at the border of the states of Veracruz and Puebla...
the concept of UMA (Units for conservation, management and sustainable use of wildlife) has become an
innovate system for the wildlife management in Mexico and there are instances that show its viability. However,
from the standpoint of wildlife conservation, the results of its operation are unconvincing. the statistics on species that are curren...
In February 2007, in the municipality of Santo Domingo Ingenio, Juchián District, Oaxaca state, we obtained the record of an individual of Baird's Tapir (Tapirus bairdii) from a photograph provided by the inhabitants of the site. The photograph was taken in 2005 during the rainy season, showing a dead adult tapir which was hunted at only 1.5 km nor...
