An expansive and detailed review of the biology of Caribbean amphibians, considering their threats, conservation and outlook in a changing world. Amphibians are the group of vertebrates undergoing the fastest rate of extinction; it is urgent that we understand the causes of this and find means of protecting them. This landmark illustrated volume br...

Interactions between heterospecific species with similar sexual signals can lead to errors in mate attraction and species recognition. As a consequence sexual signals might diverge to reduce communication errors. Since high-density populations create more noise than low-density populations we hypothesize that individuals should suffer less acoustic...

This study investigates ovulation and egg deposition behaviors in the anuran Eleutherodactylus coqui from Puerto Rico in response to stimulation with gonadotropin and gonadotropin releasing hormones. Five hormones were tested by injection over a range of doses, including mammalian LHRH, avian LHRH, fish LHRH, D-Ala6, des-Gly10 ethylamide LHRH and h...

Acoustic and trophic activity patterns in calling males of Eleutherodactylus eileenae (Anura: Leptodactylidae).- Ecological data of E. eileenae obtained from field research at the Biosphere Reserve "Sie- rra del Rosario", Pinar del Río are presented. The acoustic activity of males of this species is analyzed in detail establishing the annual and di...

A new species of frog is described from the north slope of the Sierra Maestra, Eastern Cuba. It is closely related to Eleutherodactylus riparius, but differs from in several morphological and acoustical characters. The new species is associated with the edges of upland streams. Information on the natural history of the new species is provided.

Publisher Summary This chapter presents a review of the herpetology of Cuba. The formal taxonomy of Cuban herpetology starts with the description of Typhlops lumbricalis by Linnaeus in 1758. The first major contribution to Cuban herpetology was in Ramon de la Sagra's Historia Fisica, Politica, y Natural de la Isla de Cuba, which was published over...

SNAKES of the genus Tropidophis (Tropido- phiidae) are Neotropical in distribution, and most of the species are endemic to the is- land of Cuba (Schwartz and Henderson, 1991). They are mainly ground-dwelling snakes that feed on lizards and frogs, and most have the unusual ability to change color (Hedges et al., 1989; SBH, pers. obs.). The current t...

Two species of Cuban frogs, Eleutherodactylus cuneatus (islandwide) and E. sierramaestrae (eastern provinces), are found along the banks of streams. A re-examination of type specimens, and of newly collected material has revealed that E. sierramaestrae is a synonym of E. cuneatus, that E. cuneatus is restricted to Eastern Cuba (primarily upland are...

Cayo Paredón Grande is located on the northern side of Cayo Romano, approximately on 22 grades 29 minutes N and 78 grades 7 minutes W, with 8.7 Km2 of territorial extension. The island's herpetological community is composed of three species of amphibians and 11 of reptiles. A list of the species is presented. Ecological distribution, habitat select...

A new species of Eleutherodactylus is described from several caves on a limestone plateau, the Meseta de Cabo Cruz, in eastern Cuba. It is a member of the subgenus Euhyas and is most similar to E. planirostris. However, it is larger in size, has strongly arched vomerine odontophores, a different call, and a different habitat preference. The two Cub...

A new species of Eleutherodactylus is described from the upper elevations of the Sierra Maestra in eastern Cuba. It is a common and widespread species that calls from arboreal sites and is very similar, morphologically, to the common lowland species E. auriculatus. However, the two species occur sympatrically at intermediate elevations in the Sierr...

Eleutherodactylus iberia is described from the Cuchillas de Moa in eastern Cuba. At approximately 10 mm snout-vent length, it rivals the Brazilian brachycephalid Psyllophryne didactyla in being the smallest species of tetrapod. The new species appears to be most closely related to the Cuban species E. cubanus, E. limbatus, and E. orientalis; and al...

The Ivory-billed Woodpecker Campephilus principalis has suffered from destruction of its habitat over the whole of its range, being last recorded in eastern Cuba (Ojito de Agua) in 1987. The only chance for the species was that the last-known birds had moved to adjacent areas, or that other populations existed in other mountainranges. Between Febru...
