Automated surveillance systems are becoming a critical requirement in maritime domain, due to the continuous expansion of maritime security threats. Although several automated systems have been developed, detection of maritime threats is becoming more challenging due to the constantly changing tactics adopted by seafarers to evade detection. Machin...

Accurate fetal Ultrasound (US) image segmentation facilitates advanced obstetric health care by enabling remote monitoring of expectant mothers. However, fetal US image segmentation is challenging due to distortions, motion artifacts, various imaging conditions and presence of maternal anatomy. Recent research work has proposed many methods towards...

Pupil localization extracts pupil center coordinates from images and videos of the human eye along with the pupillary boundary. Pupil localization essentially plays a major role in identity verification, disease recognition, visual focus of attention (VFOA) tracking, dementia cognitive assessment, and human fatigue detection. However, the process o...

Imaging is one of the key medical diagnostic tools to observe internal organs and soft tissues. One such tool is ultrasound scanning, which is highly utilized in gynecology and echo cardiogram. This is due to the number of advantages of ultrasound scanning, such as being non-invasive, free of radiation, economical and real-time. However, access to...

Accurate detection of the human metaphase chromosome centromere is a critical element of cytogenetic diagnostic techniques, including chromosome enumeration, karyotyping and radiation biodosimetry. Existing centromere detection methods tends to perform poorly in the presence of irregular boundaries, shape variations and premature sister chromatid s...

Technological advancements have realized inexpensive standalone portable devices to perform ultrasound scans, which enables underfunded rural medical establishments to be equipped with ultrasound scanning facilities. However, the scarcity of medical experts to observe ultrasound scans is a major limiting factor. It is possible to overcome this limi...

We present a prototype software system with sufficient capacity and speed to estimate radiation exposures in a mass casualty event by counting dicentric chromosomes (DCs) in metaphase cells from many individuals. Top-ranked metaphase cell images are segmented by classifying and defining chromosomes with an active contour gradient vector field (GVF)...

Article
Despite extensive analyses on the centromere and its associated proteins, detailed studies of centromeric DNA structure have provided limited information about its topography in condensed chromatin. We have developed a method with correlative fluorescence light microscopy and atomic force microscopy that investigates the physical and structural org...

Cytogenetic biodosimetry is the definitive test for assessing exposure to ionizing radiation. It involves manual assessment of the frequency of dicentric chromosomes (DCs) on a microscope slide, which potentially contains hundreds of metaphase cells. We developed an algorithm that can automatically and accurately locate centromeres in DAPI-stained...

Centromere localization in human metaphase chromosomes is an essential task in many cytogenetic diagnosis procedures. The centromere location can be utilized to derive information such as the chromosome type, polarity assignment etc. Methods available in literature yield unreliable results mainly due to high variability of morphology in metaphase c...
