Introduction
Parallel to my duties as a faculty member, I formulated my research philosophy by keep asking research questions for the attempt to explain, predict, and understand interesting and challenging needs arise in chemical engineering fields. These needs have shaped my research interests within three fields of chemical engineering which focus on energy, environment and technology.

Ceratoluteolin 1, a new luteolin derivative was isolated from Salvia Ceratophylla growing wild in Jordan along with other 14 known compounds including two sterols, two triterpenes, four flavonoids and six phenolic compounds, one of which is reported for the first time from Lamiaceae family. The isolated compounds were genkwanin-4′-methyl ether 2, β...

The stability of molecular CO over the unreconstructed low-index surfaces was studied using ab initio atomistic thermodynamics. Results for Ir(1 0 0) in a diluted CO environment indicated that the 0.5 ML-phase was the most stable structure, whereas, in a concentrated CO medium, a 0.75 ML-phase exhibited the highest stability. Results of CO/Ir(1 1 0...
Article
The ab initio atomistic thermodynamics technique was used to calculate the surface free energy diagrams. These diagrams were obtained for hydrogen over the unreconstructed low-index iridium surfaces. Results indicated that the Ir(110) surface acquired the highest hydrogen intake among the low-index surfaces with a coverage of up to 2.33 ML. However...

Density functional theory, in conjunction with ab initio atomistic thermodynamics, were used to investigate the stability of the low index cuprous chloride surfaces, and predict the morphology of CuCl nanocrystals under high pressures of chlorine. The rocksalt orientation of the lattice was adopted to resemble a CuCl crystal under high pressure. Un...

The occurrence of radon (²²²Rn) in environment (groundwater and indoor air) from geogenic sources is receiving an growing attention due to its adverse impact on human health worldwide including Jordan. Highlighting the current status of radon in Jordan, the present study of radon concentrations in ground waters in the Amman-Zarqa basin (AZB) was in...

Isobaric vapor-liquld equilibrium data have been measured for the binary system involved {Dl-isopropyl Ether (1) + Isopropanol (2)} at 95 kPa. An all-glass re-circulating still equipped with a Cottrell circulation pump was used. The formation of an azeotrope was characteristic for this system at x 1 = 0.796 at the minimum boiling point. Thermodynam...

The biodegradability of wastewater containing priority pollutant pesticide [Vydine or triadimenol (C14H18CLN3O2)] in different bio-reactor configurations was investigated. Two laboratory scale biological reactors were employed: one reactor under aerobic condition and the other under anaerobic condition. The aerobic reactor was operated at an ambien...
Article
Advanced oxidation technologies (AOTs) using UV lamps and solar radiation were investigated for treating aqueous solutions of pesticide (Vydine). One group of experiments was conducted using UV light irradiated at wavelengths of 254 nm (UV254) and 350 nm (UV350). Another similar group was conducted using solar radiation incident during the months o...
Article
BACKGROUND: Removal of recalcitrant chemicals is an essential step in conventional wastewater treatment plants. Among these, pesticides are of great environmental concern. Different treatment options were compared in this work: the combination of advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) with biological treatment, an aerobic process and anaerobic biologi...

Fenton and ozone treatment was investigated at laboratory scale for the degradation of aqueous solutions of nitrobenzene (NB). Effects of reactants concentration (03, H2O2, and Fe(II)), temperature, and pH on NB degradation were monitored. Reaction kinetic of these processes was also assessed. A rapid reaction took place for Fenton process at highe...

A pesticide (Vydine) considered priority substances by the Jordanian environment ministry and dissolved in water at 25 mg L−1 (or at maximum water solubility) has been degraded at solar pilot plant scale using direct solar UV-light, solar UV combined with H2O2 or Fe(II) and solar photo-Fenton. Two different solar irradiation conditions (med day irr...

A new water-based crystallization technology to minimize the water-related problems of concrete is presented in this study. This technology is dependent on the formation of sodium acetate crystals inside the pores of the concrete after concrete spray treatment with its aqueous solution. Results have indicated a significant reduction in water permea...

Adsorption characteristics of the pesticides Deltamethrin were studied in aqueous solutions using acid treated Oil Shale Ash (ATOSA) in a series of batch adsorption experiments. The maximum loading capacity of the adsorbent and the rate of adsorption were found to increase with increasing the pesticide initial concentration, mixing speed and were f...

Adsorption characteristics of the pesticides Deltamethrin and Lambda-Cyhalothrin were studied in aqueous solutions using oil shale ash (OSA) as an adsorbent. The maximum loading capacity of the adsorbent and the rate of adsorption were found to increase with increasing the pesticides initial concentration, mixing speed and decreases with temperatur...
Article

Adsorption characteristics of the pesticides Deltamethrin were studied using Shale oil ash as an adsorbent. Langmiur and Frendlich models fit the adsorption data with R2 > 0.97 in all cases. The highest adsorption capacities for Deltamethrin were 11.4 mg/g. When the initial concentration was 15 mg/l the Qmax values obtained with SOA of 202.25 µm av...

A characterization study was performed on the spent oil shale (oil shale ash) obtained from the combustion of Jordanian oil shale. This characterization utilized different analytical techniques. These include scanning electron microscope with energy dispersive spectrum analysis, X-ray fluorescence, X-ray diffraction and Qemscan. During the combusti...
Article
Continuous contact mixing was used to examine solvation of organic matter found in Jordanian oil shale. Different types of organic solvents as well as their mixtures were examined under different operating conditions. The solvation of organic matter was found to increase with the increase of mixing time and temperature, and to decrease with the inc...

This study is designed to investigate the effect of electric charge associated with artificial surface on single platelet loss when known shear stress is applied. A capillary flow system is designed in a form of electric capacitor for the purpose of electric charge separation. Either positive or negative charge is applied to the walls of capillary...

Liquid axial dispersion and gas hydrodynamics were studied in water–air bubble column under slug flow conditions. Two models were presented, compared and discussed in order to describe the liquid axial dispersion with analytical solutions. A bubble column with diameter of 7.6 cm and length of 63 cm was used in this study. The column was equipped wi...

Porous alumina films containing parallel capillary pores of uniform size were fabricated by anodically oxidizing high purity aluminum films in phosphoric acid and sulfuric acid solutions. These films were formed into membranes by post-oxidation processing that removes unoxidized aluminum as well as a barrier layer of alumina from the base of the po...

The growth kinetics of porous alumina films formed by anodic oxidation of aluminum in phosphoric acid under galvanostatic conditions was studied. Scanning electron microscope measurements, Faraday's law, and oxide film mass measurements was used to analyze the growth kinetics and obtain film growth rates, pore density, and porosity. Current efficie...

A single basin solar still with basin area of 0.98 x 0.98 m was constructed from galvanized iron sheets and an inclined glass cover. The still was provided with 525 W electrical heating tapes, fixed under the still basin for indoor steady state operation. The variation of basin temperature, glass temperature and evaporation rate were measured durin...

A single-basin solar still may be used for primary concentration of dilute ethanol produced from fermentation. In order to describe the simultaneous heat and mass transfer in the still, different models have been proposed and tested against some experimental measurements on a still having a 1 m x 1 m basin area. Measurements were based on steady-st...
