Project
The basic goal of the project is to identify and bring together all scientists of Ionian origin or current residence in the Ionian islands, working in Greece or abroad, in order to help the future development of the Ionian islands through science. Initially we aim to identify eligible scientists based on specific criteria. We will then organize the identified scientists into a new searchable database and create a community/scientific forum aiming to help the development of the Ionian islands through science. The research project FOODBIOMES compises of four subprojects led and co-ordinated by Democritus University of Thrace. The key objective of the project is the implementation of microbiome applications in food systems directed towards the production of novel formulations with enhanced quality and functional characteristics, the development of validation methods for food authentication, the advancement of traditional food processing methods and the elucidation of the impact of novel compounds in human microbiome and health. Ionian University (IU) participates in FOODBIOMES on the subproject that involves the development of bioprocesses to generate bioactive and functional components and their subsequent evaluation in food applications. The project also relates with the pillars of circular economy and bio-economy, since food waste and by-product streams will be employed and evaluated via physical, chemical and/or microbial processes to generate novel products that can re-introduced in the food supply chain. The project is implemented under the Action "Regional Excellence in R&D Infrastructures", funded by the Operational Program "Competitiveness Entrepreneurship and Innovation" (NSRF 2014-2020) and co-financed by Greece and the European Union (European Regional Development Fund).
