This article posits that both sociology and neuroscience of the emotions leave out important elements when explaining the phenomenon of emotion, arguing that for that reason the two disciplines should collaborate with each other. The author argues that, in their explanation of the emotional process, two prominent neuroscientists in the field of emo...

The power of love has become a renewed matter of feminist and non-feminist attention in the 21st century’s theory debates. What is this power? Is it a form of domination? Or is it a liberating force in our contemporary societies? A central argument in this book is that, although love is a crucial site of gendered power asymmetries, it is also a vit...

Love and Society by Swen Seebach is a sociological study of love at its best. In recent years there has been a global boom in the scientific studies of love (García-Andrade 2014). Why? How has love become so crucial in sciences as it has in our lives? This book intends to understand why and how love has come center stage from a sociological point o...

Recently a colleague asked me: ‘What would be the difference if you had used “sexuality” rather than “love”; as the central concept in your theory?'2 An immediate response would be something like this: Love makes all the difference! But, as a matter of fact, sexuality also has a crucial place in my theory. In this chapter I will give a more elabora...

This article recovers the personal pronoun "we" for thinking about love in the couple from a relational perspective. The authors identify three analytical levels for empirical research of the loving "we": semantics, situation, and enminded bodies. They establish the scope of Elias and other authors in the study of love. They reiterate the timelines...

The main objective of the paper is to show how love in society can be connected to certain sociological problems like social bonding. When love is analyzed through its connections to disciplinary problems, some differences appear in relation to society and sociology itself. The paper ends with some reflections on these differences and an agenda for...
Conference Paper
According to Norbert Elias, the loving relationship between two people is, at the same time, subjective and objective. It is so because the relationship is related to three different yet overlapped dimensions, namely: the experience of love from the ‘I’ in relation to another person; the experience generated in the ‘US’ which implies observation an...

The book includes a collection of essays that provide with an overview of the scientific conditions that have made visible "love" and " the body" as global scientific subjects of study. Paradoxically, this global interest in love and in the body as a social construction is studied differently depending on the geographical context, these differences...

The study of love in different fields of the social sciences has grown exponentially in recent years. The broad range of tendencies (theoretical, methodological, and in the definition of the object of study) in these studies has prompted the need to study love in several analytical dimensions. The aim of this article is to follow this initial intui...
