Morphologic development of unidentified Sarcocystis sp. schizonts associated with encephalitis in a 9-wk-old gray fox (Urocyon cinereoargenteus) from Texas is described. Sarcocystis schizonts were confined to lesions. They were sparsely distributed and their staining affinity for hematoxylin and eosin varied with developmental stages; immature schi...
Background
Bison (Bison bison) and cattle (Bos taurus) are closely related (can interbreed) and they also share many parasites. Cattle are commonly infected with one or more of the eight named Sarcocystis species: Sarcocystis hirsuta, S. cruzi, S. hominis, S. bovifelis, S. heydorni, S. bovini, S. sigmoideus and S. rommeli. Among these, the full lif...
Background
Parasites in the apicomplexan genus Sarcocystis infect cattle worldwide. Assessing the economic importance of each such parasite species requires proper diagnosis. Sarcocystiscruzi, a thin-walled species, infects virtually all cattle. The prevalence of the other thin-walled parasite, Sarcocystisheydorni, remains less well established. Th...
During a survey for Sarcocystis infections in Pennsylvania in wild canids, muscles from the tongue and limb were examined microscopically for sarcocysts. Between 9 February 2024 and 11 February 2024, muscle samples were collected from 76 coyotes, 46 gray foxes, and 21 red foxes from Pennsylvania hunter harvested animals. Around 5 g of muscle was ex...
As predators of a wide variety of livestock and wildlife species, wolves (Canis lupus) could serve as definitive hosts for species of Sarcocystis parasites infecting many intermediate hosts. Sarcocystis sporocysts have been observed in the feces of wolves fed infected beef before, but genetic tools have not yet definitively identified which species...
Hepatozoon sp. stages were detected in histological sections of the muscles of 11 of 25 bobcats (Lynx rufus). Parasites were detected from the myocardium of 11, tongues of 4, and limb muscles of 5 of these animals, which had been hunted in Mississippi in 2017. The intensity of infection was highest in the heart. Only asexual stages (meronts) were d...
Trichinella murrelli Pozio and La Rosa, 2000, is the primary sylvatic trichinellid encountered in temperate North America. During a survey for Sarcocystis in wild canids, a single worm matching the morphology of encapsulated Trichinella was observed in a muscle tissue squash from a gray fox male originating from Pennsylvania. The worm was photograp...
Sarcocystis infections were found for the first time in the muscles of 3 of 3 gray wolves (Canis lupus) from Minnesota. Two kinds (thin-walled and thick-walled) of sarcocysts were detected, based on the appearance of the sarcocyst wall. In wolf 1, sarcocysts were thin-walled (<0.5 μm), and without any visible protrusions. Ultrastructurally, the sar...
Muscles of 25 bobcats (Lynx rufus) from remote areas of Mississippi in 2017 were tested for parasites. Testing for Sarcocystis infections included microscopic examination of fresh unstained muscle squashes, pepsin digestion of hearts and tongues, and histological sections of paraffin-embedded tissues. Sarcocystis spp. infections were detected in th...
Rectal contents of 56 adult bobcats (Lynx rufus) in 2014 and 2017 from remote areas of Mississippi were examined microscopically for parasite stages after the sugar flotation method. Among the helminths, eggs/larvae found were: Paragonimus sp. in 12, Toxocara cati-like in 16, trichurid–capillaridlike in 3, hookworms in 27, and lungworms in 28. Amon...
Currently, 7 named Sarcocystis species infect cattle: Sarcocystis hirsuta , S. cruzi , S. hominis , S. bovifelis , S. heydorni , S. bovini and S. rommeli ; other, unnamed species also infect cattle. Of these parasites of cattle, a complete life cycle description is known only for S. cruzi , the most pathogenic species in cattle. The life cycle of S...
Here, we report the first known outbreak of clinical protozoal myeloencephalitis in naturally infected raccoons by the parasite Sarcocystis neurona. The North American opossum (Didelphis virginiana) and the South American opossum (Didelphis albiventris) are its known definitive hosts. Several other animal species are its intermediate or aberrant ho...
Myxozoans are highly specialized metazoan parasites with a very diverse host range that live on aquatic hosts. In both wild and farm-raised fish, myxozoans are the most frequent parasites. The aim of the current study was to evaluate any myxozoan parasite found in different organs of Schizothorax richardsonii. Live fish were transported with artifi...
Mullets (Mugilidae) are economically important fish in Israel. Two species of mugilids (i.e., the thinlip mullet Chelon ramada and the flathead grey mullet Mugil cephalus) have been stocked in the Sea of Galilee (Lake Kinneret) in order to increase fishermen’s income and lake water quality. These catadromous species do not reproduce in the lake, co...

During the present study, we describe a novel myxozoan that forms plasmodia in the gill filament of Schizothorax esocinus collected from River Jhelum of Kashmir Himalayan region (n = 26). Description of the new species is based on morphology of the myxospore and on partial 18S rDNA gene. The results showed that the plasmodia were large, visible wit...
Out of the total 2600 myxozoan species reported so far, Thelohanellus Kudo, 1933 is the second most prevalent genus comprising of about 150 species after Myxobolus Butschli, 1882 infecting both freshwater and marine fishes. In general, these are mostly histozoic (within the tissues) and sometimes coelozoic (in body cavities). The present paper deal...

Beekeeping is the maintenance of honey bee colonies, commonly in hives, by humans. It is the rearing of bees in
captivity for obtaining honey, bee wax and for artificial pollination. Honey is a natural sweet substance produced
by honey bees, from the nectars of plant flowers and honey dew (White, 1969). The present study aim to analysis
the physiol...

I got these parasites from eye and intestine of a marine fish.
Thank you.
I have always used Xylene to stain my slides and also in histology during my PhD. But now, I want to to use some Xylene replacements for staining and in histology too. But I am not sure about the results of using Xylene replacements instead of Xylene. Please suggest. Thank you in advance.
