Introduction
I currently work on 5 main research topics:
- Creative planning & sustainable local development, especially in small and medium-sized towns;
- Role of social and institutional innovation in urban transformation;
- The relationships between Nature and the City;
- Metropolization dynamics at the regional scale;
- Impact of major infrastructures on metropolitan attractiveness.
My research builds on an interdisciplinary and comparative approach, and combines in a systematic way theoretical elaboration & modelling with various empirical methods (surveys, case studies, statistical and data analysis...). Rooted in a broad understanding of social and human sciences, my work covers varied geographical, historical, institutional, socioeconomic, cultural... contexts and territorial scales.

This article aims to explain how innovations in urban governance contribute to economic resilience of post-socialist regional metropoles, by retracing the path development process of the local governance systems in two Romanian cities - Timișoara and Cluj-Napoca. Firstly, the paper brings analytical cross-fertilization between urban governance stud...
Citation: Hamdouch, A., & Carrière, J.-P. (2022).

This article assesses the role of social innovation (SI) as a driver of urban transformation through the case-based analysis of an ambitious social housing urban project in the Dominican Republic, specifically in the emblematic slum La Barquita, in the heart of northern Santo Domingo. This project was led by a dedicated public body, URBE, which is...
This issue discusses the concept of social innovation (SI) as a potentially transformative factor in urban planning and local development. SI represents an alternative to economic and technology-oriented approaches to urban development, such as that of 'smart cities', 'creative cities', etc. This is thanks to the emphasis SI puts on human agency an...
This paper is part of the research on functional roles of European towns conducted by a group of researchers gathered around the ESPON project 'TOWN'. Building on the systematic analysis of the socioeconomic dynamics of 31 European small and medium-sized towns (SMSTs), we identified three profiles of their local economies. The first profile is defi...
Despite that small and medium-sized towns (SMSTs) have been, and continue to be, a central part of the history of Europe, these places have largely been neglected by urban research. The ESPON TOWN project, on which this Special Issue builds, sought to redress this neglect performing a comparative analysis of their position and role across Europe. I...

For a long time, innovation has been considered as a complementary or marginal parameter of the spatial systems. Since, innovation gradually became a fundamental structuring element, reporting by its cycles of the processes of territorialisation, of dynamics and decline of spaces and territories. Research is from now on in position to reconsider th...
The contributors provide an overview of theoretical perspectives, methodologies and instructive experiences from all continents, as well as implications for collective action and policy. They argue strongly for social innovation as a key to human development. The Handbook defines social innovation as innovation in social relations within both micro...

Innovation policies, regional space and territorial dynamics. A tentative framing in the French context
In recent years, many countries have engaged in decentralisation/regionalisation policies of their administrative and political structures as well as their economic and social actions. This evolution tends to redefine the space and the modes of i...

Despite its real difficulty to disseminate and profoundly change the dominant economic regulations, sustainable development has given rise to significant new practices both public and private. In this overview article, which also introduces this thematic issue of the journal, we focus on two major modes of the embedding of these practices: territor...
The aim of this introductory paper is to put into perspective some key methodological and practical issues raised by the analysis and implementation of Sustainable Development (SD) approaches in recent years. The key point made here is that, while SD analysis has gained in depth and methodological improvement, implementation issues remain problemat...
In several countries, the remarkable development of the 'green economy' in recent years has gone hand in hand with the implementation of strategies of integration (more or less rapid and thorough) of public policies linked to the environment. This policy integration strategy is generally a necessary condition for the encouragement and viable develo...

This evolution tends to redefine the space and the modes of interaction among the institutions in charge of innovation, and therefore tends to create an overlapping...
Based on the case of the biopharmaceutical industry, the aim of this paper is to challenge the core conviction now widespread within the “spatial clustering theory”, which devotes a key (if not exclusive) role to geographical proximity in explaining clustering dynamics of innovation activities within spe-cific territories. Our argument is threefold...
Abstract:
The academic interest in innovation clusters and networks has given rise to a vast stream of works in recent years. Besides defining the notions of clusters and innovation clusters or networks, a core topic within the literature relates to the analysis of the logics underlying the emergence, the structuring and the evolution of innovative...

A very important stream of theoretical and empirical research has marked the literature on Territorial Innovation Systems (TIS) over the last twenty years. One key achievement of this research effort is the emphasis put on the structuring role of territorial dynamics in the deployment and spatial organisation of industries and innovation activities...
There has been in recent years a remarkable development of the literature on High-Tech clusters. This research effort has convincingly emphasised the specificity of High-Tech sectors (especially in Information and Communication Technologies and in Life Sciences) and of the spatial and reticular dimensions underlying their innovation dynamics. Despi...
This paper focuses on the clustering dynamics based on/supported by R&D offshoring trends as exemplified by the biopharmaceutical sector in China. It suggests two baselines of the institutional arrangements appropriate to initiate innovation-based clusters: (1) emphasis on the linkages and expansion in global innovation networking, and (2) focus on...
Regions tend to become the relevant space for the analysis of public funding of innovation, as emphasised by numerous recent works. However, it is still to be demonstrated that the regional level is really the right spatial scaling for implementing innovation public policies. The aim of this paper is to provide a series of analytical and empirical...
