This paper reports a study on the impact of petroleum refinery effluents on the bacterial load and diversity of the aquatic ecosystem in Skikda Bay (Algeria). The results showed a large spatiotemporal variation in the isolated bacterial species. This difference between stations and seasons could be attributed to environmental factors and to the pol...

This study aims to assess the toxicity of lead Pb⁺² and anthracene in zebrafish (Danio rerio) eleutheroembryos survival, development, behaviour and neurotoxicity. Fish-embryo toxicity (FET) tests were conducted according to the OECD guideline TG 236. The video tracking system Zebrabox® was used to evaluate the effects of these chemicals on 120 hour...

The aim of this study was to assess the performance of a laboratory-scale Hybrid Constructed Wetland (HCW) for industrial wastewater treatment planted with different macrophytes at different hydraulic retention times (HRT). The results revealed that the HCW planted with Phragmites australis and Lemna minor (PA/LMs), and the HCW planted with Typha l...

Objective In this study, we present the evaluation of wastewater biological treatment by WWTPs (wastewater treatment plants) and LTPs (lagoon-based treatment plants) in Algeria using the results of analyzes of the samples of 108 stations, this work falls within the framework of a survey carried out by the research center in biotechnology (CRBt) in...

The current study aims to the spatiotemporal assessment and monitoring of hydrocarbons contamination in water and sediments of Skikda bay (Algeria), as a result of the presence of industrial wastewater rejected by a petroleum refinery complex in the area. Water and sediment samples were obtained from six different sites during the fourth seasons in...

The ecological importance of soil bacteria is not limited to their number or biomass, although these parameters contribute greatly. Indeed, their main asset lies in their great genetic and functional diversity. In this study carried out in the abandoned mine, located in Sidi Kamber (Oum Toub, Skikda, North-Est of Algeria) our objectives was to dete...

The paper reports the biomonitoring of metallic pollution generated by Jijel city and the port of Bouddis on the coast of Jijel (Algeria) using algological species algae [C. officinalis (Linnaeus, 1758) and Ulva lactuca (Linnaeus, 1753)] as bioindicators and biomarkers, which indicated heavy metal concentrations well above international standards (...

This study was conducted to assess both biological and chemical pollution of Oued Seybouse (Guelma). To achieve that, indicator bacteria of faecal pollution were isolated and counted and physico-chemical parameters of such watershed including anionic surfactants were measured. Also, acute toxicity of sodium dodecyl sulphate (as an ionic surfactant)...

Secondary metabolites such as polysaccharides and lectins from seaweeds were characterized by a broad spectrum of immunomodulatory and anti-inflammatory effect. There are few studies in the literature about the bioactivities of Algerian Ulva lactuca marine algae extracts; that remain largely unexploited, thus this study aimed to examine whether pol...

Concentrations of Cd, Cr, Cu, Pb and Zn were determined in water, sediment and tissues of fish (Cyprinus carpio and Barbus setivimensis) from November 2014 to August 2015, in order to estimate the aquatic pollution in Hammam Grouz dam, by the technique of atomic absorption spectrophotometry. The concentrations of heavy metals in the water and sedim...

This paper reports the biomonitoring of metallic pollution in the mine of Sidi Kamber Skikda town, to determine the resistance and/or tolerance to Zn, Pb, Cd and Cu in metalliferous plants. During the period of March–May, 2015, soil and plants samples were collected from three different stations in the study area. The total heavy metal fraction was...

This paper reports a study of pollution in the coastal waters of Jijel, Algeria, using algae Ulva lactuca and Corallina officinalis as bioindicators. Samples of seawater and algae were collected at four different stations from the coast of Jijel, during the period of April–June 2014. The heavy metal content (Pb and Zn) was determined in seawater an...
