Introduction
PhD by the University Complutense of Madrid (UCM). Outstanding Cum laude and Extraordinary Doctorate Award. My main line of research focuses on applying models and simulations, as well as statistical tests, in different disciplines in order to contribute to decision making in environmental problems. Currently, I am Professor in the Department of Statistics and Operations Research, Faculty of Mathematical Sciences, University Complutense of Madrid, Spain.

Description
  • I develop my main line of research studying the socio-ecological landscapes of olive groves analysing, through future projections and erosion models, their economic and ecological sustainability with the aim of proposing management alternatives that increase their durability. I am currently finishing my PhD thesis entitled "Analysis of the sustainability of an agricultural landscape of olive groves applying dynamic models: different management scenarios".

More than 60% of the European population lives in areas considered rural. In many cases, this rural population has been consolidating cultural landscapes regarded as socio-ecological systems preserving traditional agrarian practices and biocultural diversity. These landscapes are threatened by land intensification and rural abandonment, thus decrea...

Context Olive groves are key features of Iberian Mediterranean landscapes. With the intensification of olive grove production, some negative environmental impacts on soils must be considered to achieve farm sustainability. Objectives To estimate, theoretically and empirically, soil erosion in olive groves of Alentejo (Portugal) considering differe...

Environmental problems on a global scale (such as climate change) are of increasing concern in the scholar. However, it is unclear to what extent society is aware of the severity of these problems. The aim of this study is to advance our knowledge about the environmental perceptions of citizens, with the understanding that citizen participation and...

Olive groves are Mediterranean socioecological systems. In Portugal (350,000 hectares of olive groves), a transition is ongoing towards intensification. Such effects may arise from the incremental use of agrochemical fertilizers. The Alentejo region, Portugal, was stratified according to the olive management systems (i.e., extensive groves managed...

Spain has more than 2.5 M ha of olive groves, maximising its area in Andalusia, with 1.5 M ha. Assuming the socio-ecological character of these crops, whose contribution of ecosystemic services (ES) is fundamental for the society, it is highly relevant to orientate their management towards practices that guarantee their durability. The organic mana...

Olive groves are representative of the landscape and culture of Spain. They occupy 2.5 M ha (1.5 M ha in Andalusia) and are characterised by their multifunctionality. In recent years, socioeconomic and environmental factors (i.e., erosion) have compromised their sustainability, leading farmers to abandon their farms or intensify their management. T...

Olive groves are Mediterranean systems that occupy more than 2.5 M ha in Spain and 0.352 M ha in Portugal. Assuming the differences between both countries in terms of olive grove regulation and considering their multifunctionality, it is useful to implement agronomic indices to estimate their sustainability. The Soil Loss Tolerance Index (SLTI) and...

Olive groves form characteristic Mediterranean socio-ecological landscapes, occupying more than 5 M ha; 2.5 M ha in Spain. In recent decades, traditional extensive management of olive groves has shifted to an intensive regime, with some cases of abandonment. These situations triggered negative environmental and economic externalities that led farme...

Olive agroecosystems have for several decades undergone management changes aimed to meet the demands of new agricultural policy trends and of consumers and society. While the main role of olive groves is the production of olives and oil, its multifunctional performance is supported through the European and regional legislative framework, promoting...

Spain is the world's leading producer of olive oil, with the largest number of olive agro-systems in the Andalusia region. However, rural migration, low profitability, and biophysical limitations to production have compromised their sustainability. Soil erosion is the main cause of declining production and must be controlled to sustain production a...

In the last 50 years, both the agricultural labour force and irrigated land area have increased almost eightfold in Spain. The main objective of irrigation, in the short term, is to increase agricultural production. However, in the long term, the environmental externalities of irrigation and its direct relationship with soil erosion processes are m...

Context In the Andalusia region (Spain), olive grove agro-systems cover a wide area, forming social-ecological landscapes. Recent socioeconomic changes have increased the vulnerability of these landscapes, resulting in the abandonment and intensification of farms. The provision of the main ecosystem services of these landscapes have thus been degra...

Cystic fibrosis is an inherited disorder of the cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator gene (CFTR) that affects the respiratory system. Current treatment is palliative, but there is a gene therapy under investigation which involves inserting a functional CFTR gene into affected cells. Given the clinical variety of the disease, it is ne...

Statement of the Problem: Cystic fibrosis is the autosomal recessive genetic disorder with the highest incidence in the Caucasian population, being caused by mutations of the cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR) gene. Although the current treatments focus on increasing the quality of life of the patient, a gene therapy of vira...

Olive groves in the Iberian Peninsula make up around 50% of the agricultural area, presenting a great socio-economic and cultural relevance (Lomou & Giourga, 2003), which in addition to their multifunctionality gives them priority for the application of sustainable landscape planning and management. Although the management of these systems has trad...
