Question
Asked 10 October 2017

Who owns the intellectual property in the published article?

The article has the first author, co-author 1, co-author 2 and so on. The first author does the main work, such as preparations and research. One of the co-authors is also responsible for the financial side of the publication, so it is needed to specify him as a corresponding author. Does this leave intellectual property for the article after the first author?

The issue should be discussed among authors before the work is submitted for publication. In a normal circumstances, however, joint authorship implies joint ownership. It is advisable that joint ownership be formalized in a written agreement among authors.
I agree with Gabriel Faimau. Anyone listed as author has intellectual property rights unless there's a contract suggesting otherwise.

Hi,
The intellectual property of a published article in a subscription journal belongs to the publishers, and that is why the publication in these type of journals is free of processing charge. In the open access journals' domain the IP remains with the authors, because in most cases they are charged with article processing fees.

There was also a nomination link, which I removed from the text above and that I did not try to open, as well as the abstract of a paper that was accepted a few days ago and made available online about 10 hours before that mail was being sent. According to the website (https://sciencefather.com/awards/), one needs to pay a registration fee in order to apply for an award. Is this a new scam? Thanks for your help.
