Which countries offer PhD positions as paid jobs in English?

Hello, does anybody know which countries offer PhD positions as paid jobs (in English?) I am currently aware of such a possibility only in the Netherlands. Thank you so much in advance!

Public universities in Hong Kong offer PhD studentships around 2000 US$ per month. However you have to pay tuition fees, accommodation etc. out of that. PhD students get a student visa and a resident ID card for the duration of their studies.
Medium of instruction in universities is English.

Hello Maria,
post-graduate positions are also paid in Germany, as so called "Wissenschaftliche Mitarbeiter". It depends on your background, but many faculties also hire English speaking colleagues...
All the best,

Some Finnish universities offer such positions, too (e.g. Oulu), but not to all students.

all universities in Switzerland such as Zurich, ETH, Bern, Geneva, EPFL Lausanne provide paid PhD positions in English based in their stringent selection criteria! And needless to say the research here is fantastic!

Shahid, I am a bit confused. I was just looking at a PhD program in Zurich univercity and it said you are expected to pay fees! So then i guess you have to first find funding? Then on another page it said that there is a PhD student salary set by the Swiss National Science Foundation, at present 47540, and there I got the impression that everybody gets paid... Do you know which is the case? does it vary per university?

I highly recommend Norway. At the moment, there seem to be a surplus of funding for PhD positions each year during recruitment time. The salaries are generous to PhD students and you have most of the rights and privileges of a regular university employee. Plus, Norway is an excellent, egalitarian place to live and study. Highly recommend it.

The Ph.D. studentship opportunities are available in Sweden, Norway, Switzerland, Finland, Holland, Germany and France to mention a few, but I think preference is given to students from EEC member states.

Hello guys,
In one of the announcement for phd vacancy in physics, wageningen university offered a full funding of 2790 £ per month which is pretty awesome I think.
However In a finland, there was a similar position which pays 2450 £ without taxation and minimum tax in finland is 15.5 percent and this amount would be increasing by your performance. Anyone knows which one of these two options are better ?
Maybe Netherlands offers higher payment but living cost and taxation are also higher than Finland or other European countries.
And many of you mentioned about Switzerland and Sweden but how about living costs?

The Swiss Federal Institutes (EPFL, ETH, EAWAG) advertise their PhD positions as jobs and generally fly in candidates in the final round of selection for interviews and a lab tour. One of my students went through this process a couple of years ago. I don't know how the process has changed since the pandemic.
For the US, it generally depends on your field as you have to locate and interview with a professor that has a large research grant - this can be done by looking at journals, trade journals, or websites that advertise positions. In my field, Environmental Science & Engineering, PhD and postdoc positions are advertised on the AEESP website (https://www.aeesp.org/jobs). The positions on this site are usually funded.

How do I cite a Web page using EndNote?

In many or even most cases, it will be necessary to manually enter a new reference in EndNote if you are trying to cite a Web page.  Keep in mind that Web sites can be tricky to cite because information is not always consistent or clear.  (Click here for a short video titled "Adding a Manual Reference to EndNote.")
In an EndNote library, go to References and choose New Reference.  In the blank reference, use the "Reference Type" pull-down menu to change the selection from the default "Journal Article" to "Web Page."  Type or paste in as much of the following information as you can ascertain (see screenshot below):
Attach JPJ File Below
  • Author - If there are one or more personal names associated with the specific page or article you are citing, enter them using the format "Smith, Sandra B."  Use a return between each person's name.   If there is no individual named, you can use the organization as the author, such as "American Cancer Society" followed by a comma.  (This is to prevent EndNote from interpreting this as first/last names, which would erroneously result in a "person" named Society A.C.)
  • Title - If the article has its own title, use that.  If not, use the name of the overall Web page.  If there is not an obvious name, look at the URL for a clue.  You may end up using the organization's name if no title is apparent.
  • Year - If the article is dated, use that year.  If it is not, look for a copyright year at the bottom of the Web page.  If none is given, enter "n.d." (for "no date").
  • Access Date - Enter the month, day, and year you looked at the Web page (e.g., April 5, 2014).
  • URL - Copy and paste the URL from your browser address bar.
Here is a sample Web page citation in several different format styles.  Remember that when you change the style in EndNote, it does the work of changing how the citation will look, based on the information you entered in your blank reference.
