What makes a steam boiler a closed system?

In thermodynamics, a closed system can exchange energy (as heat or work) but not matter, with its surroundings. An isolated system cannot exchange any heat, work, or matter with the surroundings, while an open system can exchange energy and matter.

A steam boiler can be considered as a closed system if the accessories attached to it are included in this consideration. In practice, the boiler will have valves or vents to prevent pressure buildup so there will be loss of some steam. To make up for this loss, there will be inlet(s) from which liquid water is added so it is not closed all the time but most of the time.
When steam boilers have leaks, as many of them are, then they will not be considered as perfectly closed systems.

Dear Nizar,
Thank you very much for your precise and beautiful answer.
Almost every boiler have valves or vents to prevent pressure buildup so there will be loss of some steam.o make up for this loss, there will be inlet(s) from which liquid water is added so it is not closed all the time but most of the time.
Boiler is a closed system. Always the rate of steam demand is feeded to the boiler. Generally, the combustion of oil is manipulated by the steam demand.
