A good teacher is a mentor who leads by example. Help students learn a profession and a career.

Empathy, positive reinforcement, be open to all kinds of questions (many students did not get a solid study technique or even basic education skills from their former schools), share not only your knowledge but your experience with it. 4. Establishing and maintaining momentum and pace for the lesson.

5. Encouraging pupil participation and getting all pupils involved.

To me the most important quality of a good teacher is kindness. S/he should be KIND. Other qualities include, but not limited to, being friendly, a wonderful personality, knowledgeable in the field of study, good listener, and etc.

The most significant quality of a professor is his/her leadership quality. Of course, professor must have academic performance, but the leadership quality is vital.

In addition to knowledge of the subject, he/she should have many soft skills - most of all communicate effectively.

A student in need can access him during office hours, and virtually if not found in the office. He is open and fair, giving each student the same treatment, no preferences.

3. Knows his material:

He can answer any question a student may ask, and is extremely passionate about the material and teaching it to his students. Also, he is confident, not afraid of making mistakes and admits to them, and most importantly communicates properly.

Qualities such as; Interactive, charismatic, organized, challenging, alive, motivating, innovative, and encouraging are a must.

It is the most wonderful feeling when a professor makes students feel that they have high and realistic expectations for their success. This gives students the confidence and the motivation to work hard and achieve their goals. Students need to practice what they have learned, they must fail in order to succeed, and a good professor is one who is here the whole time, because if a student fails, it only means that the professor has failed as well.

You did not specify the definition of a professor. Do you mean professor as an academic title? I see a mix of answers about academic and teacher roles. Both do not have to come hand in hand. I had plenty examples of very bad teacher and good academic performer and other way around.

Teacher need not to know! Note that knowledge transfer days are all in the past. Neither is a teacher "sending" or speaking the whole time. In fact the teacher's role is to activate student and sharpen his skills. If student is not willing you can talk, he will sleep. If student is not ready you can be a book of wisdom, he will stare on his phone.

Character of a teacher plays also minor role. Once students know your style and expectations they will adapt a matching coping strategy. Teacher need only behave predictably (integrity).

While selecting lecturers for university level teaching, the recruitment body must have some mechanism to ascertain that they have these qualities!
