[Deepfake technology is a quickly emerging and evolving technology with the ability to drastically impact society in both negative and positive ways. Deepfake technology uses generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) to develop video, images, audio, and text. The emerging and complex technology provides the opportunity to create, educate, innovate, and deceive.
CONCLUSION Deepfakes can cause societal and political impacts as well as be used to educate, train, and assist individuals in various tasks, creating efficiency. While the positive can greatly help society, the negatives must be mitigated through detection, organizational buy-in, and strong governance. A consistent focus must be put on educating the public, encouraging them to be skeptical of what they see online without having that skepticism turn into a broader distrust and disengagement of all information . From the speech JFK never got to deliver and was brought to life through deepfake technology: “In a world of complex and continuing problems,; in a world full of frustrations and irritations, America’s leadership must be guided by the lights of learning and reason, or else those who confuse rhetoric with reality, and the plausible with the possible, will gain the popular ascendancy with their seemingly swift and simple solutions to every world problem” (Cereproc, 2024).]

Exposure to deep fakes technology is highly realistic but the use of artificial intelligence to create deep fake images has a significant psychological impacts on both individuals and society. On a basis of personal level, encountering deep fakes can erode trust in digital content, leading to confusion, anxiety, and a persistent sense of uncertainty. We have seen in the news articles that the Individuals may experience increased skepticism towards all media, causing cognitive dissonance as they struggle to discern truth from the AI-based fabricated images. The distrust can extend to relationships, where manipulated videos or audio can be used to deceive or blackmail, resulting in emotional distress and can lead to damaged interpersonal connections. Societally, deep fakes threaten the foundational trust in public institutions and democratic processes. They can be weaponized to spread misinformation, influence public opinion, and incite social discord, potentially destabilizing communities as a result the eroding faith in media and political figures. The proliferation and the rise of deep fakes undermine journalistic integrity and challenge legal systems, as verifying the authenticity of evidence becomes more complex and challenging as well. There is a fear of being subjected to deep fakes may lead to self-censorship and a chilling effect on free speech. The psychological impact of deep fakes is profound, fostering an environment of distrust and insecurity that can alter perceptions of reality and undermine the fabric of society.
