Question
Asked 20 September 2020

Reliability of Book Publisher?

I need your opinions, experience and help if this publisher is reliable, as they send me an email inviting me to write a chapter with publishing fees [Book Publisher International (bookpi.org)].
I search in the predatory list, but I couldn't find them.

The Beall’s list (in general) is focussed on open access publishers of journals (and not publishers exclusively publishing books).
In this case be careful. In the contact info you see an e-mail address (sciencedomain.org) as well as the same suggested ‘office’ in London suggest a link between this publisher Book Publisher International and the publisher ScienceDomain International (https://www.sciencedomain.org/ ). This latter one is included in the Beall’s list:
So suspect.
Best regards.

I have no comments on Book Publisher International but I recently reviewed a paper for one of ScienceDomain's journals and I feel they have thorough processes to get paper submissions duly peer-reviewed. I know little about the publications beyond the paper that I reviewed. They follow open peer review systems that are more transparent and the peer reviewers are recognized at Publons. I am yet to receive Publons credit and will update this thread once I get it.

Good and interesting point you raised. The thing is that the publisher “SCIENCEDOMAIN international” is suspect since it is mentioned in the Beall’s list of potential predatory publishers.
According to an investigation on recent spam, it has been indicated that SCIENCEDOMAIN International (SDI), International Knowledge Press and ResearchPromotion.com are in fact one and the same. Indeed, the contact address of International Knowledge Press is:
ASIA PACIFIC, International Knowledge Press, N.S. Road, Tarakeswar, Hooghly, PIN-712410, West Bengal, India
Address Research promotion (some sort of agency for all sort of services) is:
Asia-Pacific, International Research Promotion, Hooghly, West Bengal, India
While Science domain is located at:
SCIENCEDOMAIN international, Guest House Road, Street no - 1/6, Hooghly, West Bengal, India
Both SCIENCEDOMAIN and International Knowledge Press are mentioned in the Beall’s list:
the website mentioned (http://www.ikpresse.com/ ) is defunct their current website is https://www.ikprress.org/
SCIENCEDOMAIN used to be notorious for extensive spamming and together with their attempt to hide their true location (in India) were the main reasons why they were included in the Beall’s list. So, all this seems to point in the direction of predatory and the advice to stay away from this.
However, for example the journal “Journal of Pharmaceutical Research International” has some features of a legit and genuine journal:
-Indexed in ESCI (remains to be seen whether they will keep this way, but it is the first step towards a real impact factor by Clarivate)
-The name is changed; it was starting with British and now the true location is no longer hidden it is a good thing to remove the suggestion that the journal has a British origin
-They are transparent about the publication charge
-After a couple of months, they release the peer review history, so full transparency
-All papers have an assigned DOI
-On behalf of the publisher SCIENCEDOMAIN one has to say that they had made a pretty convincing statement against predatory behaviour: https://medium.com/@it.sciencedomain/sciencedomain-international-fights-against-predatory-publishers-3a3365de3765
-In the meantime, they are no longer hiding their true location (taking away one of the reasons why they were put in the Beall’s list in the first place)
-They passed a number of the many sting operations that have been performed from time to time, for example the fake application to become a member of one of their editorial boards: http://www.sciencedomain.org/announcements
-They are pretty open about their indexing: http://www.sciencedomain.org/page/abstracting-indexing including all the discontinued information
So, a mixed picture all together. I tend to say that this publisher is trying to get their act together and made already some considerable steps to improve. Looking at your positive experience with them and all the positive experiences given in the following related question:
Even if my estimate happen to be accurate it is unfortunately a fact that getting indexed in the Beall’s list happens way faster than delisting.
Anyway, indeed sometimes things are not so black and white, I hope this helps to make your own judgement.
Best regards.

Yes if those who have experience of publishing with that particular publisher can share their experience it will help the rest. I am trying to publish a chapter with them. Once I finish with the process and gain experience I will share it. I have taken a calculated risk to see what happens, as no one else shared any experience so far.

In the meantime, things change. For example Mohd Hairul Mohd Salleh mentioned that the publisher is not included in any predatory list. Since 5 February (https://beallslist.net/changelog/) “Book Publisher International” is added to the updated version of the Beall’s list of potentially predatory publishers: https://beallslist.net/#update . The reason seems to be as indicated in my reply of 20 September 2020: the fact that there is a link between “Book Publisher International” and “ScienceDomain International”.
Best regards.
PS. The database of ESCI only includes journals so inclusion in this index of a book, chapter or publisher is not possible.
There is a so-called 'Book Citation Index', see for more info: https://clarivate.com/webofsciencegroup/essays/selection-process-book-citation-index-web-science/ You can check inclusion of a book publisher here: http://wokinfo.com/mbl/ Springer gives 18642 hits, Book Publisher International 0 hits.

For the benefit of others who have not received predatory publication-invitations, watch for these three quick signs.
(1) They are often unsolicited and contains links to other websites or products
(2) The emails usually include another email address in the body of the letter, which the author encourages you to use for sending your reply
(3) They are usually lengthy emails with many options to ensure you see one that will meet your expectation.
These are some of the preliminary findings from a longitudinal study on predatory practices targeting academics, which I hope to complete in 2022.
Good luck, colleagues!

Yes we need to share our experiences on publishing with the particular book publisher. I have submitted a book chapter and got their acceptance letter for that. Later I got the galley proof for corrections if any. I did that and submitted it. They have acknowledged that too. So far, my experience has been good. I am waiting to see how it finishes. Once I gain that experience I will publish more chapters with them as they have offered me more. I replied to them that I would like to see how the current experience with them goes and that if it is successful, I will definitely publish more chapters with them. They wrote back that they honor my decision.

It was my first experience of publishing a book chapter. From the time I got the offer from the Book Publisher International through the process of manuscript preparation and final publication, the experience has been extremely smooth and positive. The communications have been fantastic. I thank Book Publisher International for all this. I will definitely publish more chapters with them and recommend them to my fellow colleagues. I do not know the quality of value of the book, as I am not an expert in that field. But, the whole journey was like a dream and the final result, is like the icing on the cake, truly rewarding.

If you are invited to send your work and pay a fee, you should be aware that this is the procedure typically utilized by predatory commercial publishing businesses known as a "Vanity Press," which makes money by charging an upfront fee and by profiting from sales. A legitimate scholarly or academic press requires prospective authors to follow rigorous submission procedures, including entry-level screening by the editorial staff, peer review, possible revision writing, and willingness to wait for the final approval of the editorial board, members of which hold a doctoral degree and an academic research and/or teaching faculty position with a college, university, or scientific research institute.

The journal “Italian Journal of Sports rehabilitation and Posturology” looks suspicious. It seems to be an initiative of a prof in Italy who ‘honoured’ himself with being the co-author in a large portion of their publications… Furthermore:
-I estimate that more than 50% of their papers are written by the same small group of authors
-After more than 8 years still no serious indexing
-Papers I checked were poorly edited
-Your observation that they are already in 2023… at least seems to indicate that they do not follow normal scientific standards
To me it looks like vanity press at best. I would say avoid.

According to Butler's recommendations:
  • Check that the publisher provides full, verifiable contact information, including address, on the journal site. Be cautious of those that provide only web contact forms.
  • Check that a journal’s editorial board lists recognized experts with full affiliations. Contact some of them and ask about their experience with the journal or publisher.
  • Check that the journal prominently displays its policy for author fees.
  • Be wary of e-mail invitations to submit to journals or to become editorial board members.
  • Read some of the journal’s published articles and assess their quality. Contact past authors to ask about their experience.
  • Check that a journal’s peer-review process is clearly described and try to confirm that a claimed impact factor is correct.
  • Find out whether the journal is a member of an industry association that vets its members, such as the Directory of Open Access Journals (www.doaj.org) or the Open Access Scholarly Publishers Association (www.oaspa.org).
  • Use common sense, as you would when shopping online: if something looks fishy, proceed with caution.

ResearchGate is a great resource for such discussions, and there are many similar ones referring to a range of obscure publishers. Much could be said regarding why people open up these discussions in the first place. Typically, they smell a rat but are not able to articulate what this means, so it is good that Shuraik has already offered such helpful advice. In terms of the publisher's claim that publishing with them is a career enhancing step, I would recommend some careful thought. If you are questioning the reputation of the publisher, what will your potential future employers or panel members for your promotion application think of *you* (not the publisher) when you list your book chapter as evidence of excellence? Is there evidence to suggest that leaders in your field will be interested in the proposed book and is the editor qualified to ensure that the book is addressing a recognised gap in the literature that can usefully be filled?
If you are young in your career, accepting an invitation to write a book chapter for a lesser known publisher could provide an opportunity to improve your writing skills. Hopefully, however, you would have the opportunity in the future to edit your own book, choose your own chapter authors, based on your expertise, and work with a reputable publisher. Either way, I do not approve of unsolicited invitations requesting money from authors.

As long as the republishing process is legal, and the original (journal) publisher provides requisite permission, I see the author's payment to the publisher as a reasonable way of supporting academic info-sharing beyond just traditional western-dominated research domains.
