Nurse Experiences with Moral Distress
Denise Gawley
Hamric's definition of moral distress is when "an individual's moral integrity is seriously compromised, either because one feels unable to act in accordance with core values and obligations, or attempted actions fail to acheive the desired outcome."
Using this definition, I am seeking stories from hospice or palliative care nurses who believe they have experienced moral distress. I am researching themes and the particular connections between patient autonomy and moral distress in nursing.
I'll go first. In 2012, my elderly home hospice patient fell and broke her arm. While in the hospital still under hospice care, her physician started her on IV morphine after she told me she wanted her pain managed at home. She died in the hospital two days later. In my eyes, this amounted to palliative sedation without consent. Her physician told me he was going to "put her on a drip and let her fade away." Her son confided that he had no idea what happened to his mother.
Understanding that nursing has a culture of silence, please email me and be assured your story will be held in the strictest of confideniality. I understand the impact of speaking up; believe me. My email is dcouchgawley@drew.edu

A new understanding of the universe is emerging from the sciences: instead of regarding the universe as a nonliving system, evidence increasingly suggests it is a unique kind of living system. This is not to describe our universe as a “biological” system, but rather to say that it is infused with consciousness and seems to have properties we attrib...
