Land conflict is a common occurrence in Arica.
The following are the common results of land conflict:
  • Loss in productivity on one or both conflicting parties.
  • Loss of peace of mind.
  • Sometimes this may lead to the death of one or two of the conflicting party.
  • Takes away land ownership from one party (processing of land title deed is rarely possible on the part of the less privileged.
  • The stronger contender (financially) continues to abuse the one who is less strong in terms police summons and sometimes court orders.
  • Loss of non-productive financial expenditures in mitigation costs.
  • Sometimes 'peace offerings' are secured just to avoid a conflict [one party pays off the other to settle an agreement even when they know that the payment is not fair. this sometimes may even result in the loss of surrendered property.
  • Land conflicts are costly especially when the matter is taken to court; in terms of legal, travelling, maintenance and other logistical costs.
  • The pain of feeling cheated, unfairly treated especially in the case when the conflicting party is a third party and comes in as a result of having more financial power including 'juju' (spiritual power to harm); this emotional pain is difficult to quantify in financial terms.
  • In some instances land conflicts results in the loss of property following a court order.

Land disputes provide a considerable obstacle to agricultural advancement, sometimes stemming from conflicting interests in land use. Conflicts may arise among farmers, local communities, and commercial organizations, especially under pressure to increase agricultural output or when land tenure arrangements lack clarity. In several areas, land disputes are intensified by population expansion, urbanization, and environmental deterioration, which elevate the need for arable land. Such disputes impede sustainable farming methods, undermine livelihoods, and may incite societal unrest. Resolving land disputes necessitates explicit land rights, egalitarian policies, and inclusive decision-making to guarantee fair access and sustainable use of land resources.
