Is their a specific way that multilingual speakers differ in their use of translanguaging?

I think translanguaging style/patterns can vary based on an individual's communicative goals, repertoire, education, and sociolinguistic context. Exploring these patterns can be helpful to the field of forensic linguistics.

Dear Dr Ameer Ali . Thank you for highlighting this important subject. Translanguaging, as a concept, has gained currency in the last years. It reflects the shift from monolingual ideologies in the study of multilingual education to multilingual ideologies and dynamic views of multilingualism. This shift is clearly related to recent developments in the social context. I believe it would be of great benefit to all fields of linguistics.

Translanguaging, I think is basically affected by the macro sociolinguistic factors that influence the adoption of of such multilingual-style based use of language.

Yes Hasan, sociolinguistic factors are among the main factors which determine the patterns of translanguaging. Also, there is need to see how different sociolinguistic factors in different contexts determine the fluidity of translingual practices.

It depends on the state of the languages in that speech community, that is if it is the H or L variety.

Thank you Dr Ameer Ali. I think we can’t talk about a specific way that the speakers vary in their use of translanguaging, rather their individual goals can influence the way they use code switching. In education, one may like to use a mother tongue or a second language known to all the students to explain some grammatical concepts in the target language which may be a foreign language. Forensic linguistics may focus on the expressions, the semantic aspect, the culture and the pragmatic meaning in the languages involved. This is an interesting area of study.

The language choices that we, as individuals of a social group or members pertaining to a speech community, make are paramount to the way in which we are perceived by other members. This paper focuses on the manner in which an individual can be identified by others (a sociolinguist or a forensic linguist) through his/her speech patterns. The paper...
