HPA axis markers and mental health

I am working on a project which is analyzing the effect of exercise on the HPA axis markers and the second aim is to see whether a change in markers after exercise is correlated with a mental health questionnaire. I didn't get any significant change in markers but still, I got a correlation with mental health questionnaire domains. Like a positive correlation between cortisol and depression. What could be the possible explanation for this? or are these results just random and not relevant?
