Is it alright to use a solvent to dissolve the polymer that is different to the eluent of the GPC machine?
Hello, I am trying to run GPC on my samples. However, the GPC available in our lab use THF as an eluent.
My polymer only partially dissolves in THF, but fully dissolve in Chloroform. Hence, I want to ask is it alright if I dissolve my polymer in Chloroform and run it on THF-eluent GPC?
Many Thanks in advance!

Yes, this is possible, but you should ask the column manufacturer if it is possible to use another solvent in this column. If the column is not supported, it is possible to damage the column. Still, there is another problem! you should also calibrate the GPC with chloroform solvent!
I don’t recommend this - there is a good chance your polymer will precipitate in the system - if you are lucky it just mucks up the injection part for you to clean , if not you lose the column.
when you say only partially dissolves - is this low
solubiity (so use samples below the solubility limit) or fractionation - high MW not soluble (which means the GPC will be of a different Material than the solid).
Dear James E Hanson
Thank you very much for your answer! Basically my polymer is PHB (Polyhydroxybutyrate) which I belive is not soluble in THF. However, I found this paper in which they did dissolve the polymer in Chloroform and used it on a THF-eluent SEC. I did run a few samples already and it seems to me that everything is alright!

Why GPC and NMR polymerization results don't match?
- Mathilde Torre
I analyzed my polymer sample after polymerization by NMR and GPC. The Mn that I obtained by GPC didn't match with my conversion rate obtained by NMR.
For exemple, for a PEGMA RAFT polymerization I have an average Mn at 20852 and I calculated a conversion rate at 62%. My monomer molecular weight was 500 so, normally I have to have a molecular weight around 31000 for a conversion at 62 (62*500=31000). What is the problem?

- Reem Hazem Elaasar
The FTIR spectrum confirms the crosslinking of each polymer as well as of the blend using the same crosslinker; however, the swelling results show an increased degree of swelling of the blend that is higher than that of each crosslinked polymer alone.
