Is it wise trying to find a research topic in the area of AI where many people already do a research?
I am a postgraduate student and I want to select an area of research in AI to write a master thesis. What are the pros and cons of trying to do a research in the area where a lot of people working right now? Is it wise to select active area of research like artificial neural networks or it is better to select area that is not so popular?

Ivan: Both I think. An interesting area as we are all discussing here, is "emotions and personality traits" in AI systems.
Other areas are human-machine interface of the future based on intelligent systems.
yet some other...areas you may search is "convincing simulation", or say, Love with Artificial Partners.
Still other uncommon areas may include measuring human attitude and anxiety of people toward Robots, etc.
Specialized areas like Mental Coding, designing novel human-robot interfaces and others.
Thanks.

I think in general it is of advantage to look for a somewhat active research area and then to find a topic that is not too hot. The active area makes it more likely that you will find a follow-up position (such as a PhD-position or a post-doc). The not so hot topic makes it easier for you as a beginning researcher to keep your contributions. Most important however is to have a nontrivial topic, i.e. one where you can get some results (in limited time) with your attainable knowledge (including the reading of books, research papers, and discussions with colleagues) and at the same time the results are sufficiently interesting for publication in a journal and someone reading them. Honestly I prefer such topics to be proposed by knowing elder researchers (as it happens in many areas of pure mathematics), at least for the research novice.
Hope that helps in collecting arguments
