How to add Mendeley plugin into word.
I had the same problem with Word 365 after installing Mendeley update. Here is the solution I found out, it may help other researchers.
Step 1: Open Word, then go to "file"->"options", a new window pops out.
Step 2: Select "Add-ins" in the left, then select "word add-ins" in "manage" (at the bottom), and click on "Go"
Step 3: Click "add", then select "Mendeley 1.19.4.dotm" from the Mendeley installation file, it may be in "C:\Program Files (x86)\Mendeley Desktop\wordPlugin"
Step 4: Click OK, then you should find mendeley in the "reference" tag on the top of word 365.

I just happened to have the same problem and try the following steps (as in the attached screenshots) that I solved my problem finally. As above suggested, check the "adds-in" and then click "manage" where you probably could find the same problem as my, that is my Mendeley was disabled (out of no reason and I don't even know I disabled that). So, find the drop-down menu at the bottom and pick the disabled option, then a small window would pop-up and ask you to choose one (Mendeley) to re-activate (or enable), and do that. After that, you would need to restart the laptop and then it finally comes back.

This nearly worked for me (Mendeley plugin appears on references tab), but I get the error "Run-time error '429' ActiveX component can't create object" if I try to use it. Next time I start word the plugin has disappeared again. Anyone have any idea how to solve?

Did you follow instructions from: https://www.mendeley.com/guides/using-citation-editor
and/or instructions given above by Weixin Huang?

It doesn't have troubleshooting. As per my understanding, Mendeley plugin in Ms OFFICE 365 the one which comes with the laptop has some bugs, as reported by some of our members in their earlier posts. However, it work fine with MsOFFICE 2016 version.

Hi all,
Thanks for the suggestions. Yes - it seems Mendeley Word plugin is essentially not compatible with the 365 version of Word. I managed to get my IT department to install Word 2016, and it works fine. Unfortunately it seems that since Elsevier bought Mendeley, all work to fix bugs like this has ground to a halt.

Thank you Weixin Huang I tried to use the Mendeley app to install the plugin directly, however I received a message stating the app could not find Microsoft Word on my computer.
I tried your suggestion and it did indeed work to install the add-on, however I then received the same message as Joe Briscoe "Run-time error '429' ActiveX component can't create object" when trying to use the plugin.
I went to the Mendeley support site where it mentions that Mendeley is not compatible with Office 365 click to run version. I wasn't sure what to do about this, but thank you Mateus Milani your suggestion of 'opening the task manager and ending the task Microsoft Office Click-to-Run afterwhich installing the plugin directly from the Mendely app from the tools tab' worked perfectly.

Hi,
I have the same problem with Mendeley word plugin with using MS Office 365 Pro Plus.
*Goto Windows Services> Stop Microsoft Office Click-to-Run Service.
*I uninstalled Mendeley 1.19.5 latest version and I installed old version Mendeley 1.17.3.
Run Mendeley Desktop, sign in, tools>install MS Word plugin and installed correctly. Goto Windows Services> Start Microsoft Office Click-to-Run Service and it is working fine now with office 365 pro plus.
-That is my solution until Springer (mendeley) offered me newone.
With best regards.

Here is the most helpful steps to resolve the whole problem from Mendeley support for word365 plugin:
1. Open Mendeley app
2. Press ctrl + shift + D
3. Go to the settings tab
4. Find General_HttpServerPort
5. Set it to 61234
6. Reopen Mendeley app.
Later on, you need to uninstall the previous word plug-in from Mendeley and reinstall it again.
IT works very well for me.
All the best

But again I could not find the 'Microsoft Office Click-to-run' option in the task manager.

Had the same problem with Office 365 Word. My approach which seems to work at the moment:
- Installation of Plugin via Mendeley Client is not supported
- so I followed Weixin Huang 's instruction to load the plugin manually
- But still got the "Run-time error '429' ActiveX component can't create object" , so debugged the VBA of the plugin and saw it happened when trying to create the object for the COM server and as https://appuals.com/how-to-fix-runtime-error-429-on-windows-10-and-earlier-versions/ describes that can happen with a not properly registered application, found in the Mendely installation folder the MendeleyWordPlugin.exe and did a "C:\Program Files (x86)\Mendeley Desktop\MendeleyWordPlugin.exe /regserver" - after that the plugin starts working for me
- still had the warning though, that the Add-In wasn't trusted so also added C:\Program Files (x86)\Mendeley Desktop\wordPlugin\ as trusted location (https://support.office.com/en-us/article/add-remove-or-change-a-trusted-location-7ee1cdc2-483e-4cbb-bcb3-4e7c67147fb4)
- As then it may work, but I still had to load it at every start manuall, I created a link to C:\Program Files (x86)\Mendeley Desktop\wordPlugin\Mendeley-1.19.5.dotm in the startup-folder (find your Word Starup-Folder: https://support.office.com/en-gb/article/load-or-unload-a-template-or-add-in-program-2479fe53-f849-4394-88bb-2a6e2a39479d)
With that it feels like "back to normal" for now. Hopefully Elsevier packages a fix (Cite may be technologically the future, but has no feature parity so far)...

The clean solution (without any workarounds) is to install the msi version/offline installer for office. Follow the steps given in this link and this should solve the issue.

Great Advice by Fabrice B. R. Parmentier This alternative add-on works.
However, the problem of EDITING/REMOVING an already placed reference is still missing. At least in the version that I am using.
It connects with Mendeley Online. So one needs an active Internet connection to work with this add-on.
Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz
Rishi Kumar Sharma - offline installer and msi are two distinct things though and for Office 365 there is no msi, also the offline installer is based on Click2Run technology (msi exists only for Office 2019/2016/2013). So it may or may not work, but is still a workaround. At the end Elsevier needs to release a fixed version, which handles modern Office properly.

Franz Miltner thanks for clarifying. Agree that it is still a workaround and appropriate solution would be for Elsevier to release an updated plugin that works. After trying several solutions (which did not work well), this one is working well for me and may help others too, though it involves downloading a >4 GB offline installer.

I have an Office 365 subscription from my university and had the same problem after upgrading my PC to WIN 10 recently.
The trick with downloading the offline installer describend by Rishi Kumar Sharma worked. (follow step-by-step instruction here:
However, manually adding the add-in as described by Weixin Huang resulted in the "Run-time error '429' ". Instead, I started Mendeley and installed the plugin via Tools-->"Install MS WOrd plugin". I can now use the plugin as before and also open and edit old documents.
Hope it works for others too.

Step 4: Click OK, then you should find mendeley in the "reference" tag on the top of word 365.
Worked just fine for me.

You need to copy word template file from
C:\Program Files (x86)\Mendeley Desktop\wordPlugin
and put it over this address
C:\Users\saurabh\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Word\STARTUP

For those who use word 365, please follow these steps:
1- Close the word page.
2- Open Mendeley app.
3- Click on "Tools" in the top of the app.
4- Click on "Install MS Word Plugin" and follow the instructions.
There you go, open your word page again, you will find Mendeley in the "References" working properly.

For those of you who are still having troubles with the 429 ActiveX error:
In addition to the .dotm file (as described by Weixin Huang), the following file should be also be embedded
C:\Program Files (x86)\Mendeley Desktop\MendeleyWordPlugin.exe
For this, carry out the following steps:
- Go to the "Options - Add-ins" window (as for the .dotm file)
- select “COM-Add-Ins” (not “Word-Add-Ins”), then click on "Go..."
- click "add" and select the file “MendeleyWordPlugin.exe” (you might have a different installation folder)
I have tried a lot with the suggestions being made here. The description of Huang allowed me to at least see the Mendeley button in Word, but I kept having troubles with the 429-error message. Some of you suggested to force the “Click-to-run“ process to stop, but I didn't even have that in my task manager. Changing the behavior of the ActiveX-Installer to "automatic" didn’t work either (have read that somewhere else).
So if your situation is similar, I hope I can help with the solution.

Alexander Nowak Thank you but it is still not working for me. MendeleyWordPlugin.exe is not getting added to COM add ins.
Chemnitz University of Technology
Ankita Singh It is not visible in my list of COM-Add-Ins either, but it worked for me after restarting Word.
In addition - at least on my computer - the Mendeley Add-In must be activated after each restart of Word (in this case in the section “Word-Add-Ins”; the COM-Add-In only has to be embedded once).
Also be aware that the setting is user dependent. So if you try to change the setting as admin, it only applies to the admin user and not to your personal profile.
I'm sorry if this does not provide the expected result either.

I have just installed Office 365. I have tried to disable ActiveX from internet and Windows services and nothing. I have tried all options with ActiveX and nothing. I have tried the executable of Mendeley for the Word (Mendeley WordPlugin) and nothing. I added the Mendeley Cite addin in the Word but it doesn't work properly. No option so far have worked for me in Office 365. Is this a problem of the version of the Office? I have tried different versions of Mendeley desktop programs and nothing works. Somebody has another option?
