How much similarity is allowed in thesis?
Hi all,
I am preparing for my thesis submission. When I checked my whole thesis, I got 41% similarity, but when I excluded references, it reduced to 22%. And the major portion (9%) was similar to my own research article.
Is it fine?
Thanks in advance,
Swarnali

APA requires 15% however some journals and institutions stretch upto 25%. It is however best to consult the institution or journal that you are writing to/for.

The acceptable level of similarity in a thesis may vary depending on the institution and department guidelines. However, a 22% similarity score after excluding references is generally considered acceptable. It is important to note that the similarity score should not be the only factor in determining whether plagiarism has occurred. The context and nature of the similarities should also be considered. It is always better to consult with your advisor or academic department for more information on the guidelines and policies related to plagiarism and similarity in your thesis.

I believe majority of the journals are using 15% or less is great. While 15%-20% is acceptable. 20%-25% depends which section of the similarities are triggering that part. But beyond 25% is mostly considered plagiarism. Well that's how I remember it. And if the journals are applying that approach i think most universities are applying the same limits.

It should be less than 10% excluding references. You can try to change words and content a little. But some universities are considering around 15% . It depends on the content also.
